601010 Art I

Grade Placement: 9-12               Credit: 1

Prerequisite: None

Art 1 is an introductory art course for students who have had no previous high school art experiences and is a prerequisite for all other art courses. Students will create art works in a variety of media using diverse techniques (art production); study the work of artists, stylistic periods, and cultures (art history); and develop an understanding of the critique process and learn to read and interpret the visual language (art criticism). Students will complete projects designed to teach and develop many techniques and skills, including drawing, sculpture, printmaking, design, painting, ceramics and collage projects. Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required for this course.


601020 Honors Art I

Grade Placement: 9-11                Credit: 1

Prerequisite: Completion of Summer Assignments   

Art I covers the same essential knowledge and skills as Art I but with emphasis on completing portfolio pieces toward the completion of an AP portfolio. Students are expected to be self-motivated and produce quality work in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking as well as required participation in competitions and exhibits. Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.


602210 Art II - Drawing & Painting

Prerequisite: Art 1 

Art II is for the student who wants further study in drawing and painting mediums. A variety of mediums will be studied (graphite, pen, colored pencil, charcoal, oil pastels, pastels, tempera, watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed media).Students will explore theme/content and technique in design, development and creation of original drawings for exhibitions, publications and portfolios. Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.


603210 Art III - Drawing & Painting

Prerequisite: Art 1 or Honors Art I 

Art II Sculpting

1st semester students will explore the fundamentals of ceramics. Creative expression will be emphasized while gaining familiarity with ceramic media, glazing, firing methods and ceramic design. Exploration of various art movements and artists is an integral part of this course. Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.

2nd semester students will explore and fabricate sculptures in a variety of materials such as wire, papier mache, plaster, wood, found objects, etc. Exploration of various art movements and artists is an integral part of this course. 603020 AP Studio Art III: Drawing & Painting

Prerequisite: Art II or Honors Art II 

Honors Studio Art III places emphasis on completing portfolio pieces toward the completion of an AP portfolio. Students are expected to make a serious out-of-class commitment to the production of quality artwork, at least four to six hours per week, and required participation in competitions and exhibits. Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.


603330 AP Studio Art II Dimensional Design

Grade Placement: 11-12                                    Credit: 1 

Prerequisite: Honors Art II

This class enables highly motivated students to do college-level work in the area of 2-D design.  The focus of this course is based on the principles and elements of design rather than traditional drawing and painting. Previous graphic design knowledge is a plus, but is not required. Students in AP 2-D Design will compile a portfolio of pieces that will be digitally submitted to the College Board for potential college credit.  Students are expected to make a serious out-of-class commitment to the production of quality artwork, at least four to six hours per week, and required participation in competitions and exhibits. Students are advised to have concurrent enrollment in an advanced studio art elective that supports portfolio production.  Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.


603530 AP Studio Art III Dimensional Design 

Grade Placement: 11-12                                    Credit: 1 

Prerequisite: Honors Art II

This class enables highly motivated students to do college-level work in sculpture/ceramics while still in high school. This course teaches students a variety of concepts and approaches in 3-D design so that the student is able to demonstrate a range of abilities and versatility with technique, problem- solving and ideation. Previous work in 3-D design is a plus but is not required. The student will document all artwork digitally according to specifications.  Students are expected to make a serious out-of-class commitment to the production of quality artwork, at least four to six hours per week, and required participation in competitions and exhibits. Students will submit a portfolio of work for evaluation at the end of the school year that includes, but not limited to, a variety of 3-D approaches such as: traditional sculpture, architectural models, apparel, ceramics, fiber art, or metal work. Students are advised to have concurrent enrollment in an advanced studio art elective that supports portfolio production.  Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.


603430 AP Studio Art Drawing

Prerequisite: Honors Art II

This class enables highly motivated students to do college-level work in the areas of drawing, painting and printmaking.  The focus of this course is based on mark-making. Explorations in graphite, pastel, charcoal as well as various painting mediums will help the student to create a strong collection of work.  Students in AP Art Drawing will compile a portfolio of pieces that will be digitally submitted to the College Board for potential college credit.  Students are expected to make a serious out-of-class commitment to the production of quality artwork, at least four to six hours per week, and required participation in competitions and exhibits. Students are advised to have concurrent enrollment in an advanced studio art elective that supports portfolio production.  Some supplies will have to be provided by the student and a fee will be required.
