Spanish Courses & Descriptions

50011 Spanish I 

Prerequisite: None, Credit:1

Spanish I constitutes a two-semester study of the Level 1 proficiency of listening, speaking, writing, and reading as well as language-learning skills. No prior knowledge of the language is required. Cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world are incorporated throughout both semesters. The student is expected to develop communicative competencies in present discourse through participation in a variety of oral and written activities. Acquisition of vocabulary will be emphasized throughout the year.


50021 Spanish II 

Prerequisite: Spanish I, Credit:1

Spanish II seeks to improve students’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students also gain an increased understanding of Hispanic culture. Students will review and expand upon concepts learned in Level 1 as well as learn new vocabulary and grammar. Vocabulary acquisition is emphasized throughout the year. Students will communicate orally and in writing using present and past tense.


50022 Honors Spanish II 

Prerequisite: Honors Spanish I or Spanish I, Credit:1

Honors Spanish II  continues to develop the student’s Spanish proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, and reading.  The course requires daily practice, collaboration, and active participation; all are needed to reinforce a strong language foundation.  Class activities including songs, readings, videos, language games, etc...are used to increase student learning and engagement in Spanish.  Grammar concepts learned in Spanish I will be strengthened and broadened. Students will begin to develop skills necessary for taking the AP test.  Honors Spanish II covers many of the same essential knowledge and skills as Spanish II but at a faster pace and with more in-depth exposure, without an increased workload.  


50031 Spanish III

Prerequisite: Spanish II, Credit:1

Spanish III further develops Spanish proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Students will review and practice higher level applications of concepts learned in Spanish 1 and II, as well as learn more advanced vocabulary and grammar.   Grammar concepts will cover the past tense, future tense, imperative mood, and subjunctive mood.   Class activities including songs, readings, videos, language games, etc... are used to increase student learning and engagement in Spanish.  Cultural emphasis is on travel to Spain and Latin America.  Students are encouraged to communicate with the teacher and classmates in Spanish.  


50032 Honors Spanish III 

Prerequisite: Spanish II, Credit:1

Honors Spanish III  continues to develop the student’s Spanish proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, and reading.  Honors Spanish III incorporates more advanced grammar concepts and students will continue to work towards proficiency in all modes of communication.  Various assignments and projects will involve application of higher-level thinking skills developing AP testing skills and language acquisition. Teachers and students are expected to communicate primarily in Spanish. The course requires daily practice, collaboration, and active participation; all are needed to reinforce a strong language foundation.  Class activities including songs, readings, videos, language games, etc...are used to increase student learning and engagement in Spanish.  Students workload is similar to the experience of Honors Spanish  II. 


503021 ACC Spanish III

Prerequisite: student must meet ACC enrollment requirements. Credit: 1

Study of fundamentals of Spanish: conversation, basic writing, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary building, grammar, and culture. This course fosters understanding of Spanish-speaking people through cultural comparison and development of written and spoken communication. Note that this course offers 4 college hours and begins at 8:30 am.


503022 ACC Spanish IV

Prerequisite: ACC Spanish III and student must meet ACC enrollment requirements. Credit: 1

Spring course that is a continuation of the fall ACC SPAN III course. Content focuses on more advanced conversation, basic writing, listening and reading comprehension, vocabulary building, grammar, and culture. This course fosters deeper understanding of Spanish-speaking people through cultural comparison and development of written and spoken communication. Note that this course offers 4 college hours and begins at 8:30 am.


50043 AP Spanish IV: Language and Culture

Prerequisite: Spanish III; Recommended Honors Spanish III, Credit:1

The goal of this course is for students to develop a strong communicative ability in Spanish, along with the linguistic skills (including accuracy and fluency) that support communicative ability. There is a grammar review of the major tenses and some problematic areas, but the emphasis of this course is on communication, connections, and culture. Students will gain an awareness of different cultural perspectives of Spanish-speaking peoples and be conversant on a wide range of topics that affect these cultures, such as global challenges, science and technology, beauty and aesthetics, cultural and individual identities, contemporary life, and families and communities. This approach allows students to explore our connections, our similarities, and our differences as they take their proficiency skills to the next level.


AP Spanish V: Literature and Culture

Prerequisite: Strongly recommend AP Spanish Language and Culture or equivalent, Credit: 1

The AP® Spanish Literature and Culture course provides a college-level survey of texts from Peninsular, Latin American, and US Hispanic authors. In addition to engaging with the texts from the College Board required reading list, students interpret the works within their social, literary, and historical contexts and consider the reasons these works remain relevant in the 21st century. Students build an understanding of form, structure, theme, and literary devices, and then analyze and evaluate the global interdependence that fosters the evolution of Hispanic and Latino literatures. The course is conducted entirely in Spanish and organized around the six themes designated by the AP® curriculum framework. This course prepares students for the AP® Spanish Literature and Culture Exam in May.


501011 Spanish for Native Speakers

Prerequisites: none Credits: 2

The students will maintain, retrieve, and enhance the knowledge of their spoken language through activities which will focus on the productive skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students will also acquire academic vocabulary of grammar to enhance their grammar knowledge to prepare them for upper level Spanish courses. Cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries are integrated into the teaching of these linguistic skills.
