The Culpeper United Methodist Church has a rich history that started in 1847 with the first Methodist Church in Culpeper on West Street. Our location has changed over the years as we moved to Davis Street in 1890 and now to our current location on Oaklawn in 1957. Through that time, our community has also changed as have the needs of the congregation.
Many of the needs of the congregation can be ascertained by simply listening to our members, coupled with occasional surveys to determine what is important to the congregation. We can also look at the changing demographics to determine needs. If you look at our attendance of members (who submit attendance forms), you see the following:
Total active attendees since May 2023: 295
Ages 0-3: 5 (1.7%)
Ages 4-12: 44 (15%)
Ages 13-17: 12 (4%)
Ages 18-49: 69 (23.4%)
Ages 50-69: 67 (22.7%)
70 or over: 98 (33.2%)
The results give guidance to where our priorities should be.
We have a significant number of children between the ages of 4-12, and our thriving Children’s Ministry reflects the attention to this demographic. We also have a significant number of members who are 70 years or older - that is over 1/3 of the congregation. We have many elderly members who are in assisted care facilities and are dealing with health problems.
To better support the elderly population in our church, we need to bolster our congregational care ministry. Pastor Won spends a great deal of time on visitation, but one person is not enough to meet all the needs of our congregation. Our leadership team is currently considering a proposal to use the 10 hours per week budgeted for a Praise Team leader to fund a part-time associate pastor of congregational care. The position would require some ministerial training and experience and would work an average of 10 hours per week on visitations as well as providing support during worship services.
There would be no change in the 2024 approved budget since we would be shifting funding from the Praise Team to congregational care. The 9:29 service was sparsely attended, which was one of the factors in combining the 8am and 9:29am service into one blended service, and at this time our congregational needs are a higher priority, as reflected in the demographics.
More details will be available at the upcoming Town Hall meeting On Sunday, January 28. If you have questions, comments, or would like to provide any feedback, please contact the Executive Director Kelly Weiss at kellyweiss@culpeperumc.org, or contact one of the Leadership Team members.
Blessings to all,
The Leadership Team
