Using Cardinal Voice off-campus

with Call Twinning and MiCollab Dialing

Overview

Employees working off campus often have the need to handle work calls the same as if they were working from their office.

Cardinal Voice, the university's telephone system, offers two methods for doing this:

  1. Those with the Cardinal Voice Standard Desk service level (most employees) will use Call Twinning and the MiCollab Client web app to make and receive work calls using a personal phone, without revealing the personal phone number to callers. That is, the MiCollab Client is a dialer that connects the call but requires another device to actually participate in the call.

  2. Those with Enhanced Desk service level are recommended to use Call Twinning for their incoming work calls, but may use the MiCollab mobile app on their smartphone to place outbound work calls directly.

The MiCollab Client also can be used to check Voicemail easily.

This document focuses on the first option, using Call Twinning and the MiCollab web app as a dialer.

Prerequisites

Your Cardinal Voice work extension must have Standard Desk service (or higher) to use these instructions. To determine the Cardinal Voice service level that is assigned to your work extension, please ask your department head or front office, as they receive a monthly statement that lists the service level.

You need to know your password for MiCollab. If you do not, please email cua-cardinalvoice@cua.edu to ask for a MiCollab password reset.

More about using a personal phone for Work from Home calling

Cardinal Voice allows employees with Standard Desk (or higher) service level to use a personal phone to receive and place work calls.

  • Receiving calls

    • Calls made to your Cardinal Voice (office) number ring on the personal phone number associated with your extension.

    • The caller sees only your Cardinal Voice number.

  • Making calls

    • You use the MiCollab web app to place a call. MiCollab interfaces with Cardinal Voice to call the number using your work line; you use your personal phone to participate in the call. That is,

      • When you click to place the call in the MiCollab app, your personal phone rings.

      • You answer it, and you hear the system calling the number you dialed in MiCollab. Wait for them to answer, then begin your call.

      • Note: Since the call is actually placed using the university's phone system, long distance is charged to the university, not to your personal phone.

    • The person you called sees only your Cardinal Voice number.

      • Important: You must place the call from MiCollab! If you call directly from your personal phone without using MiCollab, the caller will see your personal phone number.

You are responsible for ensuring that your personal phone has a service plan (e.g., cellular calling minutes) sufficient to cover work calling. The university does not reimburse Work from Home calling.

Set up Steps Needed

There are three one-time steps needed to configure your Cardinal Voice service for Work from Home. Each step is described in detail in its own article.

  1. MiCollab Client web app configuration: Log onto the MiCollab Client web app for the first time, change your password and provide your voicemail PIN.

  2. Update Mobile number: Use MiCollab Client to update the Mobile number associated with your extension. This is the number of the personal phone you will use for work calls when working remotely.

  3. Create a Work from Home Status: Use MiCollab Client to create a "Work from Home" Status. Once created, you can direct your work calls easily just by switching your Status between "In the office" and "Work from Home."
