Printing on a Microsoft Windows computer

This page describes how to set up your personally-owned Windows computer for printing in a classroom or lab.

1. From the Start menu, start typing the words "Control Panel" and click that application when it appears in the list. The Control Panel application will open.

2. In Control Panel, choose Hardware and Sound.

3. Select Advanced Printer Setup.

4. In the window that pops up, select "The printer I want isn't listed".

(Don't select any of the printers that appear, as they are not available due to their permission settings.)

5. Under "Find a printer by other options," Select "Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname" and click Next.

6. Type in the exact IP address in the format shown on the list for the printer you want to add (which is likely different than the one shown in the sample screenshot). Leave the other options as set, and click Next.

A printer manufacturer and model will be displayed below the Printer name box. It should be similar to the one listed for the room or possibly a generic printer driver.

In the "Printer name" box, enter a name that will help you remember where this printer is located. This is the only place you can change the printer's name.

7. Click Next and the driver should automatically appear.

8. Change "Share this printer" to "Do not share this printer."

9. Click Next and print the test page.
