Art Wars

A short time ago in a school district not so far away...

It is a period of quarantine.  A dark force known as COVID-19 has spread throughout the galaxy preventing interaction among the masses. Virtual portals are the sole means of communication.

During the pandemic a force of highly trained instructors known as the 4th FORCE at the ACADEMY sought to challenge COVID-19.

Two specialists known as JEDUCATORS who received training at the Crystal Towers Star Station have joined 4th FORCE to take on the challenge of training the new generation and ignite a spark to engage, inquire, and express for the restoration of A NEW HOPE in learning.

PROJECT

My School My Museum and COVID 19

Beginning the 2020-2021 school year with COVID was a challenge for all.  However our educators and administrators sought creative ways to engage students with arts emphasis.  The My School My Museum  partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum continued.  Museum Educator Sally Ball and Director of Arts Integration Aaron Jones collaborated with the  amazing 4th grade team to begin the year with an arts integration project combining Language Arts and Social Studies.  And since the 4th grade teachers are STAR WARS fanatics (classes are divided into Jedis, Wookies, Driods and Ewoks) we used the FORCE to create this project.

Presentation created by Aaron Jones

Language Arts classes were studying the Literary Elements of a story. Social studies were learning historical figures, how to read maps and primary resources.

We combine these disciplines and themes as well as incorporated paintings from the Crystal Bridges collection to show students how paintings serve as a visual narrative to tell a story.

The attached presentation takes students on a journey from 18th century history paintings to contemporary movie posters illustrating how artists use  The Elements of Art , Principles of the design and Literary Elements to create a powerful, visual stories of historical or fictional events.

            ART WORKS

Geoge Washington, Charles Wilson Peale, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Rosie the Riveter, Norman Rockwell, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

Students were introduced to two paintings in the Crystal Bridges collection, Charles Wilson Peale's George Washington and Norman Rockwell's Rosie the Riveter.  Using the Elements of Art and Principles of design the classes were able to identify  objects within each painting and interpret a story based on the artist's use and compositional arrangement as well as the student's understanding of Literary Elements learned in Language Arts.  With the addition of historical context was added from their Social Studies class, the students had an accurate understanding and intention of the painting as a visual narrative (History painting).

History Paintings to Movie Posters

Death Of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton by John Trumble, Oil on canvas 1787

Death Of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton with light sabers... Royce Eddington https://royceeddington.com/?p=3255

Using the example of John Trumble's history painting Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton, students were able to recognize that the painting depicted a battle scene from the Revolutionary War.  Next, a variation of Trumble's painting created by Royce Eddington was then introduced.  How is Eddington's version different?  What elements were added  and/ or changed?  Does this change  a viewer's interpretation of the story or history being depicted?  The slight modification of muskets substituted by light sabers changes the history painting from fact to fantasy. An exercise of using the Literary Elements, students composed a ficticous story using historic figures.

ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES

Understanding the Literary Elements of a story and combining them with the Elements of Art and Principles of Design artists are able to create fantastic visual narratives. Posters for movies are the perfect example.
