PHYSIC-ally Demanding Catapults
Theme: PHYSIC-ally Demanding Catapults
Purpose: Learn the physics of different catapult launching devices
Objective: Design and build a device that functions as a form of catapult
Outcomes:
•Students will discover how physics of stored energy differs among the different types of catapults (trebuchet, ballista and mangonel).
•Students will use problem solving techniques to engineer a launching device.
•Students will design and build a launching device from found objects; determine how the materials impact launching results.
•Students will measure and calculate launches to determine success of the device.
•Students will designate a theme for their catapult and creatively express in an artistic style

The presenation informs students of the historical development of various forms of catapults and how the math and science of physics are used for function of the device.
MEASUREMENTS
Students will:
Measure the height and the arc of the projectile
Calculate time from launching the projectile to the time that the projectile lands
Distance the projectile travels
These measurements provide variables to identify the Acceleration of the projectile. By knowing these measurements, students can then accurately hit a designated target.
