Prefixes
WALT spell words with prefixes
Prefixes are a group of letters that change the meaning of a word when they are added to the start. Most prefixes mean a similar thing when they're added to different words.
Success criteria:
- know what a prefix is
- know the meanings of common prefixes.
- Add prefixes onto words to change the meaning.
Facts to Know
Numerical Prefixes
A prefix is a syllable at the beginning of a word. A numerical prefix lets you know how many there are of a particular thing. Here are some common numerical prefixes.
Look at this page to see numerical prefixes.
Task One:
Watch the video. Open a new google doc, call it Yourname Prefixes Week 1. Make a list of words with prefixes from the video. Put the words into groups of words with the same prefix.

'K' Sounds
WALT spell words with 'k' sounds
Success criteria:
- The 'k' sound can be written in different ways.
- know the conventions for spelling the k' sound at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the word.
- know the conventions for choosing c or k to spell the 'k' sound at the start of a word.
- know that c is the most common way of spelling the 'k' sound.
- Know the spelling and meanings of words that use ch to spell the 'k' sound.
Task One:
Test, let's see who is ready to move on. Get a piece of refull paper. Write your name, class and the date on it. Write the numbers from 1 - 20 down the side and get ready. Once you have finished the test, reflect on Seesaw,

Learn your words that you got wrong in the test. Here is a sheet to help you. (ask Mrs DJ for a copy of the sheet). Once you have done it, take a photo of it and put it on Seesaw.

A prefix is a part of a word or a word, within a word. It is put at the start of another word to make a different meaning. It can also mean a number that is put in at the start to show which number something is in a group. It is a type of affix.
Often people want to use a prefix to mean not. There are many prefixes that mean not.
- Unnatural means not natural.
- Apolitical means not political.
- Nonviolent means not violent.
- Indirect means not direct.

dis and mis usually have negative meanings. For example, disagree, disobey, misbehave, mislead

sub usually means under. For example, subheading or submarine
