Hazelwood Academy Curriculum Intent
Our Vision: To equip our pupils with the confidence and resilience to choose a remarkable life through rich, diverse and engaging curriculum opportunities.
Curriculum Drivers
Building self worth, confidence, resilience, cooperation and a growing independence by providing a robust and stepped approach to the Characteristics of Effective Learners
The development of the whole child at Hazelwood takes place within an enriched curriculum that builds upon the National Curriculum programmes of study for English, Mathematics and Foundation subjects. We recognise that not all our pupils have easy access to a safe outdoor space and other enrichment activities. Therefore, we work alongside sports and dance specialists, provide Forest School experiences for all and opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. Pupils and parents demonstrate good mathematical skills which are built upon in the wider curriculum offer to ensure success.
Valuing quality relationships between all stakeholders that are modelled through a structured PSED offer
At Hazelwood, we recognise the importance of developing the whole child: academically, socially, emotionally and as a contributing member of their community. We benefit from a dedicated and passionate staff team who model and embed our four remarkable values:
• Be big-hearted: Pupils who show they care and work effectively as a team
• Push the limits: Pupils who have the confidence to be aspirational
• Be unusually brave: Showing resilience and seeing change as a challenge
• Discover what’s possible: Through a strong and developed sense of identity and self-worth
Investing in community and parental engagement strategies to enable pupils to benefit from parents and carers who share our vision and have equally high aspirations
We recognise the importance of parents and carers to the outcomes for our pupils and the creation of a thriving second generation community. Our parents appreciate all opportunities to celebrate and share success and so our approach includes regular events and workshops. We provide access and signposting to outside agencies including local and national charities to meet the wider needs of families including: school attendance, Early Help, Children in Need and Child Protection. With every child having the right to access a high quality curriculum.
A focus on early language acquisition and communication allowing pupils to succeed in transition to secondary education and beyond.
We believe that a motivational curriculum that is robust and structured will enable every learner to be engaged through opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills while revisiting concepts over time. The nature of our intake allows us to concentrate from entry into our early years setting to ensure language acquisition and age-appropriate communication skills are embedded within the learning journey. This ‘keep-up’ approach continues in each year group to guarantees our children are well equipped for success at secondary and beyond.
Pupils are engaged through memorable experiences and enriching opportunities such as trips, visitors and lessons that take children beyond their everyday experience.
With the changing local demographic, Hazelwood recognises that opportunities to have ‘remarkable’ experiences are pivotal to the creation of lifelong learners and responsible global citizens. We recognise the importance of broadening our children’s cultural capital through education providing memorable experiences and aspirational learning adventures that exemplify our four remarkable values.
