Music: Intent and Implementation

Intent

At Hazelwood Academy our aim is to provide a music education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and increases their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. We aim for each child to reach their full potential in music, encourage children to enjoy singing, composing and performing, and provide children with the opportunity to perform in front of an audience both within and outside of school. Music at Hazelwood teaches children valuable life skills, such as confidence, cooperation and resilience, and we believe that every child can be a successful musician.

Implementation

Our main priority at Hazelwood Academy is to teach and perfect the skills implemented by the National Curriculum for Music. Teachers provide an enjoyable and engaging music curriculum through the use of our scheme of work, Charanga. Charanga complements the national curriculum and scaffolds the learning opportunities throughout the Key Stages. Each unit of work enables pupils to explore all key aspects of music through a repetition-based approach to learning.

Each unit is structured the same:

Which ensures all skills are revised and built on each year to ensure all pupils progress and succeed.

At Hazelwood, pupils will receive opportunities to listen to a wide range of musical styles and genres; learn to sing and/or play musical instruments both solo and as part of an ensemble; and compose song with verse and chorus. These skills build on the pupil’s understanding and knowledge of pulse and rhythm. The pupils will also become exposed to musical notation and begin to read and transcribe notes on the musical stave.

For SEND learners we:

- Adapt our teaching and use of Charanga music scheme so all children can access and make good progress within their music lessons.

- Provide a range of tuned and untuned instruments so all learners can be successful in music lessons.
