Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Hazelwood Academy we offer Early Years Provision for children aged 2-5 years of age.  We are committed to providing each child the best possible start to their school life, teaching them skills and giving them experiences which will ensure their well-being now and success in the future.

We understand the importance of children being active participants in their own learning. We provide children with enabling environments which allow for exploration, enquiry and problem solving to take place.

Our environments are thematic allowing the children to gain a deeper understanding of our learning and develop memorable experiences which will shape their thoughts, views and opinions. All Early Years classes interact with the wider school and join in with the wider curriculum including PE and weekly trips to the woods.

We are also committed to supporting families in the Early Years to understand their child's development and how they can support this at home and school. Each term we run stay and play events where parents can come into school and explore the classroom and learning with their child. In addition we run a number of short courses and workshops across the academic year targeting different areas of the children's development.

We welcome all children into our nursery groups including those with 15 hour funding, 30 hour funding and also offer parents the option to pay for additional sessions including lunch.

Our Early Years Provision is arranged into three classes; Sparrows (2-3 yr olds Nursery), Hummingbirds (3-4 yr olds Nursery) and Puffins (Reception).

Our learning environment is bright, spacious and attractive with dedicated areas for individual age groups, each beautifully designed and generously resourced with quality toys and furnishings. We have direct access to an outdoor play area which is equipped with a variety of bespoke play equipment allowing outdoor learning to take place across all areas of the curriculum.

Our children love spending their time outdoors in the forest area looking for creepy crawlies, building dens and caring for plants and the environment.

Excellent use is made of local amenities including parks, gardens, churches and the library. Children are taken out for walking and enjoying the fresh air, sights and sounds of the local community.

The children have a choice of learning opportunities including arts and crafts, construction activities, table top games, themed role-play and learning with our smart board! Your child will be introduced to early numeracy and literacy skills and activities designed to develop their communication skills.

We pride ourselves on ensuring that when children leave the nursery to move on to school they do so confidently and independently, whilst taking with them the enjoyment of learning and pride in their achievements.
