English: Intent and Implementation
Intent
At Hazelwood Academy, we want to provide children with a high-quality English experience that equips the children with the skills to read, write and communicate effectively. We aim to develop a secure knowledge-base curriculum that allows children to access the world around them. Through high-quality texts, all children access a range of reading skills daily to develop them into independent and fluent readers. Our children are able to read for purpose and meaning across all subject areas, which enables them to be enthusiastic learners. We want the children to develop a love of reading through high-quality texts in our book-based curriculum.
For SEND learners this means:
Pre-teaching subject vocabulary to decrease the vocabulary gap
adapting resources and teaching to provide enhanced opportunities to record and experience learning.
Implementation
Reading and Writing is taught daily by all year groups.
Read, Write Inc phonics and Read, Write Inc Get Writing underpins our approach in Early Years and Key Stage 1.
TalkThroughStories is used in EYFS.
AET English Curriculum is used in KS1 to further develop story-writing skills.
ARK English Mastery approach is followed for Years 3-6.
Book corners in the classroom are inviting and engaging.
Accelerated Reader (AR) is used across Key Stage 2 to track and monitor pupils' understanding of home reading books that they read independently or to an adult.
Grammar is taught within the ARK English approach and is taught explicitly.
