Maths: Intent and Implementation

Intent

At Hazelwood Academy we want to provide children with a high-quality maths experience that enables children to make connections across mathematical ideas and concepts. We aim to deliver a secure, knowledge-based curriculum that allows children to access the world around them. The curriculum builds on knowledge and skills acquired in the previous year and units and provides the children with opportunities to practise and further develop these skills and deepen their understanding.

We aim to ensure all pupils:

·         Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so children develop a conceptual understanding and ability to recall and apply knowledge accurately.

·         Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry

·         Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication and persevering to seek solutions.

For SEND learners this means:

·         Pre-teaching subject vocabulary to decrease the vocabulary gap

·         Adapting resources and teaching to provide enhanced opportunities to record and experience learning.

·         Ensuring children have the resources to support them to become independent learners.

Implementation

§  Maths is taught daily in all year groups.

§  ARK Maths Mastery approach is followed for Years R-5

§  Year 6 use a combined, condensed maths curriculum.

§  Children are provided with concreate manipulatives to secure their understanding of place value and as they develop their knowledge, they are expected to use both pictorial and written methods.

§  Maths meetings are taught in KS1, this is a daily session focusing on key number skills and recall of key facts.

§  Arithmetic sessions are taught daily in KS2. These sessions focus on recall of key skills and facts to ensure fluency in number.

§  End of term assessments are completed in terms 2, 4 and 6 and are used to assess knowledge and gaps in learning for intervention.
