PSHE: Intent and Implementation
Intent
At Hazelwood Academy, our aim is to enable all pupils to succeed on their personal development journey; creating resilient, confident and independent individuals. We aim for each and every child to reach their full potential and aspire to provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.
At Hazelwood Academy we aim to deliver a consistent and effective PSHE curriculum which promotes pupil’s personal, social and health education as well as their emotional development and well being. This enables them to learn life skills to assist their personal and physical growth. We explore the changes that everyone undergoes to deal with today’s society and give pupils an understanding of the rights and responsibilities that are part of being an outstanding citizen.
Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities. In doing so, they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
In addition, our PSHE curriculum incorporates an age appropriate understanding of RSE, as set in the statutory guidance, enabling all children to be safe and to understand and develop healthy relationships both now and in their future lives.
For SEND learners this means:
Use of pictures and resources to support learning.
Support in place for Lower Ability and SEND, the scheme follows a consistent pattern, visual prompts used throughout the lesson, every lesson has opportunities to develop mindfulness skills which can be used at other parts of the day when children may feel anxious and want to use this technique.
Implementation
Our PSHE scheme of work is Jigsaw; it complements the curriculum and scaffolds the learning opportunities throughout the Key Stages. The ‘Jigsaw’ scheme of work allows Hazelwood Academy to provide consistency throughout our school, support staff with subject knowledge and reduce teacher workload.
PSHE plays a fundamental role within our learning and is integrated throughout our curriculum. In addition, we ensure that all pupils receive regular weekly PSHE lessons which focus on key objectives and skills. Teaching and learning within the classroom demonstrates clear progression across all key stages, beginning with our very youngest learners in Nursery. Progression is evident within the PSHE core themes; being me in my world, celebrating differences, dreams and goals, healthy me and relationships and changing me.
RSE is additionally threaded through these core themes and ultimately has a focus within the relationships and changing me puzzle pieces.
The PSHE curriculum at Hazelwood identifies links to British Values, SMSC and key skills into the curriculum.
To further enhance these skills and encourage discussion around current affairs, pupils also engage with Votes for Schools weekly from Year 2 upwards, in which their voices and opinions can be discussed and heard- making an impact on the wider world. Pupils are given topics around current news or key themes throughout the year in which they can discuss, debate and form an informed opinion before voting and sharing.
All adults serve as excellent role models to the children, demonstrating the core British values that we aim to embed within the school and society. Staff treat all pupils with respect and dignity, ensuring that they listen to their voice and guide them to make appropriate and responsible choices.
We encourage children to adopt a wide range of roles and responsibilities both within the class and school as a whole
We provide trips for children to experience learning outside of the school environment and to build their cultural capital
We ensure all children receive first aid training to equip them with lifelong life-saving skills
