Modern Foreign Languages MFL (French)

MFL (French): Intent and Implementation

Intent

Learning a foreign language provides an opening into other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Implementation
KS2 children are taught through a variety of techniques following the Kapow languages guidance and lesson plans, teachers will adapt planning and resources as necessary to reflect the children’s understanding and their varying needs. Children that are high achieving will be challenged with more complex vocabulary and sentence structure both in written and spoken language.

Children progress through the year groups focusing on different topics and skills. Children can ask and answer topic related questions and eventually move onto conversational French. They are eventually able to express opinions with fluency and perform short narratives. The teaching of MFL can be linked with and taught through many other subjects including counting in maths and looking at other French speaking countries in Geography. French is taught weekly and is evidenced in children’s french books.

In KS1 and EYFS pupils explore a range of languages linked to the community of Toothill and the wider curriculum.  These languages are explored through assemblies, stories, songs and Geography lessons. The Languages selected reflect popular languages spoken in the local community and from countries the children encounter in Geography.

Within our MFL curriculum teachers will make adaptations so all pupils can access the curriculum knowledge. For some SEND pupils this will include a  parallel activity for pupils so they can work towards the same lesson objectives as their peers, but in a different way . For example this may include visuals next to new vocabulary to support a pupils understanding.
