2025 Assessment and Curriculum Writing
Academy Initiative
We are now accepting application for the 2025 AWCIA Academy!
As we transition our curriculum to a new learning management system, CANVAS, we are seeking curriculum writers to help us build curriculum (Team Sports 6 ONLY) and content migrators to transfer curriculum from Brightspace into CANVAS.
Curriculum Academy will launch on February 20th and continue through June (additional information is outlined in the chart below). The June dates for all writers to attend are from June 17 – June 30 at Old Mill Middle South.
As AACPS continues to innovate to meet the needs of all students, teachers, and community partners, please consider applying as a writer (Team Sports 6) and/or a migrator to join us on this journey.
For addtionaol information regarding the expectations of curriculum writers and content mirgrators, please click here.
Interested? Not sure if you can commit? There is some flexibility in the number of hours for pre-writing and the actual number of days of in-person academy and we will finalize as soon as our teams are solidified.
New to curriculum writing? This is a great opportunity to work with your colleagues from across the county and to make some extra money as well! If you are interested in learning more about the process, please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone on the team!

Higher Institutions of Education Partner Updates
It is important to recognize the many wonderful things that are taking place in AACPS HPED every single day.
Please take a moment to nominate an amazing colleague to be featured in our "Shout Out" section each month!
This month's AACPS HPED "Shout Outs" go to...
Pam Cole (Old Mill Middle School - North) - Shout out to Cole who is always willing to help out where needed and goes above and beyond to make sure things run smoothly. She is constantly adding ideas to health lessons and supporting my classroom! ~ Stephanie Shanahan (OMMN)
Jon Desantos (Edgewater ES) - Jon is so helpful with ideas to assist in teaching my Pre K class and also with ideas to boost the climate and camaraderie at the school amongst staff. I am so greatful for him and know he would never leave me to work where people vacation. He is the opposite of selfish! Thank You Jon ~ Noah Kiehle (Ridgeway ES)
Jenny Ballard (Chesapeake Bay MS) - Ms. Ballard is someone you can always depend on! She constantly goes out of her way to help her students and department. We are extremely lucky to have her at CBMS. ~ Rachel Scaringe (CBMS)
Jenny Madden (Arundel HS) - Jenny is always willing to lend a helping hand, no questions asked. If I need her in a pinch, she is more than happy to assist. I am so grateful that she is not only a fantastic Department Chair, but also a fantastic coworker and friend. ~ Sarah Degler (Arundel HS)
Amy Falls (HPED Office) - I just wanted to thank Amy for her help and support with a student that I am concerned about. She heard my concerns and jumped into action to figure out what steps we should take to best help this student to be successful. She came out to watch him, gave me feedback on things I could do and she worked with him to assess where his skill level is and learn how best to proceed. You could tell that she cared both about the student and about helping me learn to best help him. I have a LOT to learn with adaptive PE and I am glad that she was not judgmental in her words, but was understanding and helpful. Thank you Amy!! ~ Jenn Winterling (Lake Shore ES)
Carrie Deaver (Pasadena ES) - Carrie is new to having a part time teammate but you would never know it! She is patient and has helped me to learn a lot of new ways to teach our units! I did not do tumbling at LS last year but now have the confidence too. I appreciate the way she is able to teach it safely and effectively and the kids love it. I am going to start it with Pre-k to 2nd -maybe 3rd graders to gradually build up to the older age groups at LS. I appreciate how Carrie answers all my questions and shares the materials she has for implementation, observation and grading. Thanks Carrie! ~ Jenn Winterling (Lake Shore ES)

AACPS HPED now has an Instagram page and we would love to highlight the amazing work you do with your students. Please consider sending a video or photo with caption to Haydee Traver (htraver@aacps.org) so that we can highlight the great work you do every day!
Social Media Shares and Reminders:
The Office of Communications has also asked everyone to not take pictures of students we know do not have permission to publicly post. You should not blur or place emojis over students' faces when we are not sure if they have permission. Unless you know for sure that a student’s family has given permission- do not post photos/videos. Front office staff at your school, most likely the principal’s secretary, can print a report for you of students who do not have permission to be posted on social media.
This year’s hashtags are #AACPSFamily & #BelongGrowSucceed.
