Dance is offered as a unit of study in Elementary Physical Education. Students are introduced and provided opportunities to explore the creative process through the Elements of Dance. The Dance Office provides dance residency programs based on teacher and school interest.
Dance Opportunities
This one-week program is taught by professional dancers/teachers of ballroom dance. The program not only teaches students about the dance forms, their origins, and provides practical experience in social/partner dance, but emphasizes dance etiquette and decorum, both valuable character education components.
A typical week provides the following ballroom lesson progressions:
Day 1: Merengue
Day 2: Tango
Day 3: Swing/Waltz
Day 4: Cha-Cha
Day 5: Family invitation and dress up, informal performance (live-streamed, recorded for broadcast, or in-person following guidelines for large group gatherings)
The goal of the Dancing Through the Decades Program is to introduce dances from the 20th Century that were “crazes” in their time. Discussion of specific dance crazes and their role in social dancing through time will be included in each lesson. Appropriate partnering etiquette, locomotor and non-locomotor skills in social dance forms, dance vocabulary, historical context, presentation, will be taught with an emphasis on character education.
The dances that the students will learn include the:
One Step and Animal Dances of the early 20th century (partner dances)
The Charleston from the 20s
Novelty dances from the 50s and 60s i.e., the Twist, Hand Hive, the Jerk, the Pony, and the Swim
Disco dance from the 70s i.e., The Hustle
Hip Hop from the 80s and 90s
The Ballet Theatre of Maryland Integration Project mission is to expand arts integration to the elementary level. The project was is designed to expose students who have had limited experiences with the arts. Launched in 2013, each year students from elementary schools across the county have participated in a multidisciplinary project involving narrative writing, visual arts, and dance. Participation is limited to eight schools and based on interest.
