We are bombarded by messages all the time and the people hitting us with these messages are very clever. Especially with the design principles. Read more here.
As teachers we are surrounding our students with text and it is important we take a bit of time to consider how we are helping them become visually literate. Fore example if we constantly use the same font and size of text it might be nice and comfortable and create routines but we might also be limiting their ability to adapt to different visuals.
Most of us have been through the, "I love comic sans" and the, "I hate comic sans" and now we are back the "Comic sans is good" stage. My message is that we should mix it up so our students are able to decipher different fonts and be flexible thinkers. Remember: Use a range of fonts, colours and sizes around your room to mix it up.
Typography can be a really good way of communicating mood for a piece of text. Our students have the opportunity to do this on our devices at school. We should be allowing them to choose fonts that match the genre and reason for writing. I know that child that mucks around with the font, size and colour when they should be writing can be a real pain. But what if we taught the students to use the font wisely and empowered them?
