This is common in any organisation, not just education. Talk to anyone and they'll moan about unnecessary and irrelevant emails. Its the digital version of small talk and gossip. Luckily there are a few easy fixes to help ease the flow of emails.
Use Reply instead of Reply all
Use the chat function rather than replying. This can be good if it's a bit of a conversation and the person is still online.
Use your calendar to invite people to meetings. This is how the real world does it!
Think before you send the email. Can you just talk to the person, do you need to actually send it?
