This Month's Students' Union Updates...
"I’m Leo, the Students' Union President at The Sheffield College and I recently attended the National Union of Students National Conference in Blackpool. I was joined by Bianca, Patience and Freyjah, who are all part of the Students' Union Officers team."
What is the NUS National conference?
"The National Union of Students is the collective of Students' Unions from across the UK. They campaign and advocate on behalf of students. the National Conference is a place where all the Student Unions who are under NUS come together to propose policies which NUS should focus on over the next year. These are then voted on by attendees and (if passed) NUS then campaigns to the Government, universities and colleges on these issues."
What was discussed?
"This year 5 policies were debated on, these include:
Campaign for International Student Equality
For our Future: Reform to NUS democracy and organising
Funding, Food & Shelter: Defending Students' Right to Basic Human Rights
Increased Further Education representation (this is students on courses levels 1-3) in NUS so that challenges faced are better recognised and addressed
Solidarity with the people of Palestine and preserving the student movement"
What was the experience like?
"It was definitely worth all the travel and I loved attending! It was so inspiring to see how to passionate everyone is about their different policies, issues students are facing and what NUS should do to help resolve these issues.
I was one of the policy proposers for the Further Education policy, so spoke in front of over 600 people on the importance of better representation of College students and the issues they face!
I met loads of amazing and lovely people who I now feel I have an amazing relationship with. I met representatives from National Association of Apprentices, Dudley College, Leeds Trinity, Cardiff Univiersity, University of Glasglow, and many many more."
What were the results?
"Every single policy passed this year and It was so inspiring to see each and everyone working together to make this happen, I’m looking forward to seeing these changes. More information on this past year's policies can be found here - this will soon be updated with the new ones that have just been voted in."

Fundraising and Awareness event by Oddballs Foundation
On the 21st May at 11.15am an ambassador from The Oddballs Foundation is coming into college to give a talk to our students about testicular cancer, to educate and raise awareness.
This type of cancer is primarily in males aged 15-44 so education is key. The talk will take place on the atrium opposite the canteen, outside the hairdressing salons. There will be some small fundraising activities taking place to raise funds for The Oddball Foundation Charity, just for a small charge if the students wanted to participate. There will be body painting by the makeup artists, barbering, and prizes to be won.
Please attend and support if you are able to - it could save lives!
