Welcome to Novembers Newsletter! This month has been extremely packed full of a range of exciting activities, such as the first campaign of the year on Mental Health where the SU created videos to support students, Korean Culture Day, new clubs and societies, the NUS England Conference, an upcoming Share the Wear Clothes Shop, the Student Voice Conference, Health and Wellbeing Events and so much more. Bella, the SU Deputy President has written a summary on what the SU got up to at the three day NUS England Event, a busy but inspiring week, where so much content was filmed that will be uploaded to our social media page to keep a look out for!
NUS England Conference
On Tuesday 18th November, Georgia and I went to the National Union of Students (NUS) small SUs Lead and Change event in Coventry. We spent the day doing workshops to help develop our campaigning skills and we had the opportunity to connect with lots of other college Students' Union officers from across the country. On 19th-20th November we also attended the NUS England conference. We got involved with conversations about the post 16 White Paper, neurodivergence in education, women's liberation and getting fair wages for 16 and 17 year olds. We took part in a vigil for Trans Day of Remembrance which was a chance to stand in solidarity with our trans siblings and think about how we can make our campuses as safe for them as possible. Overall, we learnt a lot from the 3 days we spent with NUS, made many valuable connections with other SUs and have come back to The Sheffield College with lots of new ideas to help us lead the SU and empower students.
Webinars
Within the Students’ Union, we recognise and understand that mental health is a big issue within both college and the world. We know that many of our students have experienced mental health issues and, having both just been students, we understand how these problems can impact your time at college. The college already has some mental health support implemented for students, so we want to make sure that students know where to find this. We also want to make sure that the support offered is helpful and works for the students using it. Big changes take time but the SU is currently campaigning to find out what support you would like to see here at The Sheffield College. We are also creating a series of webinars on different mental health topics which provide information and advice about support services you can access. You can find these below.
Korean Culture Day
Pepero Day
Join the International Society!
Find out what we did from Kim, leader of Korean Culture Day!
On 11th November, we celebrated Pepero Day over lunchtime with a vibrant cultural program at Sheffield College. The event featured traditional Korean face mask painting and the lively game of Ddakji Chigi.
Materials: Ddakji tiles, made by folding thick square paper.
Objective: Flip over the opponent’s tile placed on the ground using your own tile.
Gameplay: Players decide who goes first with rock-paper-scissors. The challenger then throws their ddakji with force or technique to flip the opponent’s tile.
Skills: The game combines strength, precision, and strategy, making it deceptively simple yet challenging.
Over 40 students took part, and each participant received a Pepero snack award, adding sweetness to the fun. The event sparked great enthusiasm, with several students expressing interest in joining the Korean Culture Society.
When?: Every Wednesday, 2–3pm (during term time)
Where?: City Campus
Who?: Open to all students and staff
