Welcome to the final Newsletter of 2024/25!
It has been such an exciting year involving so many campaigns, clubs and societies and an endless amount of activities across all campuses.
To finalise the end of the year, the SU has ran the final campaign around Pride throughout Pride Month with a range of external events promoted that you can all get involved in out of college. I hope that these events can allow you to feel as though you can celebrate diversity, rights, equality and acceptance. SHEAF's Women's Mentoring Session has took place as the final session of this term which has been a successful scheme that many young women who are students and mentors have had the opportunity to be involved in. These sessions have taken place on campus and externally to the college. The Student Celebration Awards was a huge event this month held at City Hall to bring light to what students have achieved this year, so congratulations on all who were nominated and won an award! We have also held our End of Year SU celebration this month to congratulate the SU officers on all of their hard work and dedication to the team throughout the year.
I'm happy to announce that I'm running as a candidate to continue my role as Student Union President for a second term at the college, and although my goals will remain the same in wanting to ensure that all students can feel comfortable speaking out about issues that effect them and can use their voice, I feel as though we have already achieved so much this year as a Student Union. I'm looking forward to how we can grow even more as a team with a new SU team next year and new students joining the college, so we can continue making your experience the best it can be and opening up more and more opportunities.
This month's newsletter includes everything we've been up to this month and opportunities to look out for leading into the next academic year. Thank you everyone for all of your participation, engagement and extremely hard work!
Have your say in the Students' Union Staff team for the next academic year
The Students' Union is led by a SU President and SU Deputy President - who are full-time, paid members of staff who take on the role for a year. They lead on Students' Union activity and the SU voluntary officers team. Please click below to read the candidate's manifesto points and have your say!
On the 13th June, we ran events for Pride Month as our final SU campaign of the year dedicated to all students who are involved in the LGBT+ community. As well as this, the SU promoted the offer of external events from different pride organisations to students such as pride events with parades, film festivals, pride marches, art exhibits, guest speakers and much more. This is all so that students are able to feel represented and proud of who they are whilst openly being themselves at the college.
For this campaign ran across City and Hillsborough, the catering students provided pride themed cupcakes for students to take for free throughout the event, with a range of exciting activities and offers available to all. The LRC provided pride badges with a variety of pride books discussing key topics surrounding pride and highlighting its importance. City Campus provided face paint where students could select a pride flag to have painted that represents their sexuality, and there were a range of other handouts such as pride flags, leaflets with pride organisations included that you can find out more information from and pride bracelets and stickers.
Concluding the academic year with pride as our final SU campaign was a great success, with a range of pride events taking place that students have and will continue to enjoy externally as a community throughout this special month. Students agreed how running events like this is something that should be continuously made more visible, and we only strive to grow what is offered through events like these and LGBT+ activities across college like the LGBT+ societies. Thank you so much to all who were involved in this campaign to make it as visible and seen as it was. Don't forget that if you want to get involved in the LGBT+ society next year at the college, then find out more by clicking the box below!

What have I learnt throughout my role as officer this year and as a student?
Katherine Wright - Environmental Officer and A level Student
Another year has concluded on a very successful academic year of highs and lows; but mainly highs. As the exam season comes to an, we should reflect on our hard work and progress that got us to where we are. From: hours and days of revision, to weekly contributions in class and to make life long friends who have become a supportive network through the stressful times and the joyful times. Over the past year I have aimed to delve into the Sheffield College lifestyle and become a part of many clubs and organisations the college has to offer. Since being elected to be the environmental officer of this academic year, I’ve been able to get involved in many campaigns and events that me and my fellow student union peers have been able to participate in. This includes: SHEAFS events, mental health campaigns, environmental campaigns of the clothes swap shop and getting involved in the meetings that help to plan the events that help the college become a better and safe environment for all of its members.
Furthermore, writing for the newsletter monthly has given me the opportunity to express my passions not only on the environment but offer global issues that I think are important to know about; due to the impact it may have on our future. If you are staying for your second academic year, I would highly recommend applying to be a part of the Student Union team as it offers amazing opportunities not only to express your passions and your ideas for the college, but to also meet new people and gain a consensus on what is best for the college as a team. I hope you all have an amazing summer in the sun and rest up for another academic year. I’ll see you all in the new academic year, writing monthly for the newsletter.
All the best, Katherine
˗ˏˋ SHEAF Mentoring Session´ˎ˗
Throughout this year, I have had the opportunity as SU President to involve myself in the SHEAF Mentoring Sessions. In order to trial this new scheme, there have been two pilot sessions which have involved young female students seeking the knowledge from experienced female mentors who have been involved in a variation of career paths, or have worked in a career for a long period of time throughout their life. Understanding how their job roles have positively effected them and have shaped them into the women they are today was extremely insightful and eye opening, and students involved were able to apply their skills to different scenarios and analyse their strengths and weaknesses. From experiencing these mentoring sessions myself, I feel as though it has enabled me to understand more about my capabilities and how I can apply these to my job role now and where I may see myself in the future. There is so much advice and guidance that these female mentors can recommend to anybody, and it has been a great experience thus far over these past two sessions. I can't wait for what's to come with SHEAF next year!
In our most recent session with SHEAF, we visited Sheffield Manor Lodge and learnt about the evolution and achievements that this influential organisation has had. All students and mentors agreed that spending the day at this venue was so lovely and relaxing! It was a great way to end the academic year.
Student volunteers are going to be running a donation drive this term for SheffCol Community Kitchen. The community kitchen collects donations and then distributes food packs out to students who need them. Items that can be donated are listed below and can be delivered to the donation boxes at the different campuses.
You can email marketing@sheffcol.ac.uk if you need a food pack - no questions asked.
We are also looking to widen our team of student volunteers, which is a great opportunity to get some volunteering experience that is flexible and can fit around your course, while having a huge impact in the local community.
Volunteering as part of this project will look amazing on CVs or UCAS applications and will help you build the employability skills and experience you need to be successful in your progression and future career. You can do as little or as much as you want, every hour counts!
If you would like to get involved in volunteering in this project, please email studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk
Clubs and Societies
Are you staying on as a student next year? Make sure to look out for our Clubs and Societies around college! There will be new clubs and societies formed based off of what you as students want to see across campus, and clubs continuing to run that were successful and impactful this year.
However, it's all about what you would like to see and have made available to make your experience at college the best it can possibly be!
If you have any further questions or would like to find out more about specific dates for book club running every two weeks, then please contact the Students Union email below.
What Clubs and Societies would you like to see next year?
Please email the Students Union if you have any ideas for clubs you would like to see that will create a positive improvement to your college experience. We are open to all suggestions and would love to hear what you think we could add or improve!
These are all of the clubs that have been on offer to students this year, and I would like to thank everybody that has attended! These clubs wouldn't be what they are without your engagement, active participation and your creative ideas.

˗ˏˋ Summer Football Tournament ´ˎ˗
The cricket team has been a great success this season. The students were exceptional and deserved every match they won. They showed great batting, awesome bowling, and brilliant fielding skills including some phenomenal catches.
We ended up winning our league which is a massive achievement and we can say with pride that The Sheffield College is the best cricket team in Yorkshire.

We hosted our summer football tournament on the All-Weather pitch at the Hillsborough Campus last week, with all teams playing for an individual £10 amazon voucher, the competition was close throughout and came down to the final game.
All the students thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and played with a smile on their faces. Congratulations to the winners of the competition.
