Happy New Year and welcome to the first Newsletter of 2025! I hope you've all had a great start to the year and have settled back into college. Last year, many events took place across campus, the SU's first campaign was held around Sign Language, and a range of clubs and societies were made open to students.
There was a Health and Wellbeing Event where the SU ran a stall so that students could use a smoothie bike and create their own smoothie, HE Week Fair, Freshers Fair and many more, so a massive thank you to all students for being engaged, involved and for using your voice.
There are so many exciting events ahead that all students can be involved in, such as the next campaign, Big Green Week with our Clothes Swap Shop, open to all students to donate clothes, Health and Wellbeing Events and for Student Reps, the next Student Voice Conference.
As well as this, students have achieved so much throughout 2024 that some have written pieces in the Student Newsletter about what they have accomplished, or what they are looking forward to seeing change this year.
Moving forward, I can only imagine what changes will be visible across campus and how the progress made in 2024 will only be improved from there, so make sure that you don't miss out on anything that's to come!
February 4th - February 13th
Look out for the Mental Health Campaign around Sheffield College!
It's time for the second campaign of the academic year, and I'm pleased to tell you it will be around Mental Health and Wellbeing. The Student Union Officers have brought together ideas and have decided a fantastic name for it... Mind Matters!
I'm sure you will agree this will be an extremely important subject to make visible that many students can relate to, which is why this campaign will enable students to feel more comfortable seeking support for mental health, be aware of where to find this support and how they can access it.
This campaign will be promoted by our SU officer team collaboratively through the Well-Being Matters events that will run 3rd - 6th February. There will be a smoothie bike, arts and crafts, stacking cups, support services and much more to look forward to.
What can you look out for?
This campaign will be ran across campuses, collaboratively with Kooth and Health Assured who are organisations for mental health. SU Officers will be running stalls where you can win prizes, get freebies, and get involved in activities, minigames and so much more.
Stalls ran by the SU Officer will be promoting the importance of sleep, have quizzes around women's mental health with statistics, and a raffle that students have the opportunity to get involved in and win prizes. The raffle will be in order to raise money for a local mental health charity, so that the money raised from the campaign will create an impact through benefitting students who are struggling with their mental health.
Connecting with students throughout this event is significant, because all students should feel seen, heard and feel as though they are not alone in the way that they are feeling. As the SU President, my idea to plan this campaign was in order to reduce the stigma around mental health, as this can affect peoples motivation to seek mental health treatment and care. I hope for this campaign to increase the understanding around mental health for all age ranges, and reduce the impact this may have on students futures with studying at college.
This is why it is extremely important for yourselves as students to be aware of this and what there is to offer.
Our mental health contributes to our quality of life, allows us to be feel more productive and also realise our potential. Let's come together to create a change whilst having fun.
Make sure you keep an eye out for Big Green Week!
Monday 17th March - Friday 21st March
Clothes Swap Shop - 20th March at City Campus
A message from Students' Union Environmental Officer, Katherine: "Dear students of The Sheffield College...
In two months time all campuses will be doing their part by participating in Big Green Week on the week commencing March 17th until the 21st. Throughout the week, each day will have a designated theme related to the environment that us as the college are passionate about.
Furthermore, by doing this green week it will be a push in the right direction to educate both teachers and students about the UN Sustainable Development Goals to help the environment that you can help be a part of. The following themes are: food, climate change awareness, clean energy, fast fashion and finally green travel."
"Firstly, day one will be all about food which will include more meat free options at the catering outlets at all campuses and you will receive material on this in tutorials and learn about how our food choices can affect the environment.
Secondly, day two will entail learning about climate change awareness which you will also receive learning material in your tutorial lesson about climate change.
Thirdly, day three is all about clean energy which will include workshops that both students and staff can interact with plus an event for employers.
Then, day 4 will be about fast fashion where a clothes swap shop will be held at all campuses which you can start donating to from the end of January.
There are two plastic boxes located at City campus in reception and in the Upper Student Central area, so feel free to come by to these areas and start donating clothes.
What can you donate? You can donate: shirts, pajamas, clean shoes, jumpers, trousers, dresses but please make sure that anything you donate is in good condition and has no rips or stains on. You will also learn about how fast fashion impacts the environment and people in your tutorial lesson.
Concluding green week is green travel. On Friday you will learn about electric vehicle driving in your tutorial.
Green week is a great opportunity to get involved with all things to do with the environment that is very important and vital in today's climate; especially after we’ve seen what has occurred in LA over the past week and the horrific wildfires."
If you want to take part and be involved with green week by helping out with the events you can email:

‘The Art of Self Promotion’ with James O’Hara from Threads
Thursday 27th February 10-11am
City Campus- Lecture Theatre
On 27th February, we will be joined by Jim O'Hara from Thread Management. Jim has spent his career in the hospitality and events industry. He was one of the founders of Tramlines and most recently has been one of the owners of Leah’s Yard. The most important sale is to sell yourself, to yourself. When you have a sincere belief in your own self-worth, you’re one step closer to succeeding. You inspire yourself to act, change your attitude from “will this work?” into “how can I make this work?” let the negative thoughts go, and release yourself from any self-imposed limitations. When you go into exams, job interviews or university interviews it is important you can back yourself. This session aims to give students the strategies and tools to feel confident in their ability to succeed.
Volunteers needed for Youth Social Action Projects!
Work-related activity and the development of employability skills are a valuable part of every student’s career pathway. Students are encouraged to gain career experience needed to go further through enrichment and experience of work, industry tasters, projects, industry placements and now Youth Social Action opportunities!
This term the college has recruited a group of student Ambassadors to run exciting new Youth Social Action projects in the college and the local community as part of the Association of Colleges Youth Social Action project with the Pears Foundation. This is a great volunteering opportunity to take action and address local issues (in college and in the wider community) as well as creating opportunities to undertake meaningful work experience around social action.
The Ambassadors have highlighted three areas where a big difference can be made in college and in the wider community and now you can be part of it too! The areas are:
· Mental health & wellbeing - with a focus on the positive benefits of volunteering and how to cope with exam stress
· Sport - with a focus on inclusive sport sessions and opportunities to get more involved
· Financial wellbeing - with a focus on helping students make the most of their money and feel empowered to have a healthy financial future
Volunteering as part of this project will look amazing on CVs or UCAS applications and will help you build the employability skills and experience you need to be successful in your progression and future career. You can do as little or as much as you want, every hour counts! Specific opportunities will be advertised through the Work-Related Activity platform and time spent volunteering in Youth Social Action projects and events will be recorded towards your work-related activity hours.
More information about the project is below, and you can register your interest in volunteering by clicking here
