Welcome to May's SU Newsletter! As we are approaching the end of the month, it's time to share all of the exciting activities and events that have taken place this month, and all of the opportunities to look out for in June! I hope that you all enjoy the upcoming break and have made the most of the bank holidays we've been having. So much has taken place in such a short space of time throughout this month, such as Global Accessibility Week, SHEAF Mentoring Sessions for female students to take part in, activities that our SU have ran for Thai Students, and a range of new clubs and societies running for all to involve themselves in!
Currently, the Students Union are in progress of planning the final campaign of the academic year, running throughout the entirety of June. In this newsletter, it will tell you everything you need to know about what we will be running and how you can get involved. You don't want to miss it!
In June, Pride Month will be a month of celebration and acceptance, allowing students across college to feel heard, seen and represented. Not only is this month dedicated to the work of those involved in the LGBTQ+ community, but it is also representing diversity and is creating visibility on important topics that affect people worldwide, which may also affect students like yourselves. This is why we all need to come together in order to build on this existing community and ensure that all students feel confident, supported and are aware of everything that they can get involved in.
Therefore as a part of Pride Month, there will be a variety of engaging activities across campus as well as locally in Sheffield for all to be involved in, running from the beginning to the end of June, with some events taking place outside of college after June as well!
To begin this exciting month at Sheffield College, there will be a Pride Picnic taking place at City and Hillsborough Campus on Friday 13th June from 12pm-1:30pm throughout lunchtime which will include music, entertainment, fun art activities, ice cream and a Queer-e-oake. There will be stalls to engage in throughout the day outside that offer LGBTQ+ books with LGBTQ+ badges, flags, sweets and more for students to take throughout the time of the picnic, so keep a look out for those and get involved! We're looking forward to seeing you all there.
Kelham Pride Parade will be taking place on Saturday 21st June, a free event which will begin at 12pm. The Students Union will also have a presence at this event which will be centred around multiple Kelham venues offering a variety of entertainment. Live musicians, DJs, drag queens, comedians and guest speakers.
It will also include locations around the area where you can drop in to speak to relevant charities offering advice, guidance and support for all, a range of food and drink stalls and a number of events throughout the day.
From 1pm, there will be a parade through the streets of Kelham, starting from Kelham Island Museum.
There will also be a Sheffield Pinknic making a comeback this year in the Peace Gardens, taking place on Saturday 12th July from 11am, with a host of live music, entertainment and a range of fun stalls.

˗ˏˋ Thai Students Art Club Session ´ˎ˗
Last week the SU ran an Art Club session at Hillsborough Campus that the Thai students came along to as a part of their visit to Sheffield College. It enabled these students to learn more about our SU whilst participating in a range of fun creative activities, that all were really keen to get involved in! Students got really creative and felt as though they really enjoyed the session, which enabled them to get to know other students at the college and spend their lunchtime engaged in a relaxing space.
The Art Club is open to all students at our college every Thursday at Hillsborough Campus in room D201 from 12-1pm, as well as at City Campus in room WG21 running from the same time. We hope to see you there!
˗ˏˋ Sheaf Women's Mentoring ´ˎ˗
On the 14th May, some of our female students at Sheffield College participated in the first mentoring session which took place in the Innovation Centre at City Campus. As the SU President, I felt as though this experience brought many young women together with female mentors who are extremely experienced and knowledgeable. It was such a wonderful opportunity to be able to have deep discussions with mentors about our proudest achievements and where we would see ourselves in ten years time in order for them to get to know us better.
We were also able to get to know the mentors who also answered these key questions and engage in a variety of activities that got our brains thinking and caused us to do a lot of reflecting. Key issues were focused on that affect women, something we could all contribute towards. After these issues being raised, we all communicated amongst ourselves about how these issues could be resolved. It was an eye opening experience that female students felt as though they'd learnt so much from in this one session alone, and I'm looking forward to taking part in the next session that will be coming up in June.
Student volunteers are going to be running a donation drive this term for SheffCol Community Kitchen. The community kitchen collects donations and then distributes food packs out to students who need them. Items that can be donated are listed below and can be delivered to the donation boxes at the different campuses.
You can email marketing@sheffcol.ac.uk if you need a food pack - no questions asked.
We are also looking to widen our team of student volunteers, which is a great opportunity to get some volunteering experience that is flexible and can fit around your course, while having a huge impact in the local community.
Volunteering as part of this project will look amazing on CVs or UCAS applications and will help you build the employability skills and experience you need to be successful in your progression and future career. You can do as little or as much as you want, every hour counts!
If you would like to get involved in volunteering in this project, please email studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk

Come to Well-Being Spaces for a quiet place to relax over lunchtime
These are ran by students, and the info below is from Emmanuel (one of the student's who lead on the well-being spaces)....
"This is a space where you can escape from the college population and experience mindfulness—a quiet space to mellow out. Run by a student, it was created to provide a place where students can take an hour to unwind and relieve the pressures of education. This initiative is part of the wider Youth Social Action program, aimed at promoting wellbeing for young people.
The Wellbeing Space at City campus takes place in the study room in the LRC 12-1pm on Wednesdays and at Hillsborough campus in room A017 12-1pm on Thursdays. We are also planning a tutorial session on exam stress and coping strategies, offering practical tips to manage academic pressure. If you're interested in attending or getting involved as an ambassador, you can contact studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk to express your interest."
