Hi everybody, I’m Georgia, the Student Union President for 2024/2025. I hope you've all had a great start to college this September!
Working in this role so far has been exciting and also very challenging, but I have learnt so much already.
Throughout this role, I am keen to make sure that I can be a voice for students. This is so that what happens around college campuses is fun and engaging, so that you have the best experience possible in your time at college. I have so much in store that you can all enjoy and get involved in.
There are many topics I am passionate about, such as Mental Health. This is something that I want students to feel like they can talk about. Not many people will know that I suffer with anxiety myself, so mental health is really close to my heart. I know that it can be a subject that people may be afraid to talk about or embarrassed, but don’t be, because there's more of us suffering from it than people may realise, and I’m always here to talk if anybody needs any support.
After induction has been completed in September, we then had Freshers Fair to welcome all students back into college, which was a very successful and exciting event. For students, this is a huge opportunity to see what is available around the college, to improve student experience.
Freshers Fair has made a comeback this month, being one of the largest events taking place across Sheffield College. Students and staff came along to fully enjoy experiencing a variety of activities and events, also including free food. I don't think it can get any better than that!
It was a fantastically organised day, and we had a great response to the Freshers Fair's engaging activities that we held at both Hillsborough and City College, with many students willing to participate. In the Students Union, Hillsborough ran a Cyclathon, where you had to cycle as fast as you could in 1 minute to win a £15 gift voucher. Sheffield College held a Rowathon where all you had to do was row for 1 minute to be entered into a draw to also win a £15 gift voucher. The Cyclathon's aim was to get students active and competing against one another. However, through the Rowathon, the goal was for students to feel as though they can be included no matter how passionate they are for sport and can have fun.
Consequently, it has been lovely getting to have conversations with students and seeing how an event like this brings students together, which is why I want you, the students, to feel as though you can get involved in events like these in the future, as well as form new friendships, gain confidence and have a fantastic time.
Here are some photographs of how Freshers Fair has looked this year.
Hearing how intrigued students are when it comes to participating in a range of clubs makes me want to push the need for weekly activities to take place around college. In result, I have created a table including all of the upcoming clubs and societies I have planned so far. It would be great if you came along!
Overall, the first month has been such a great start to term, which I can only see improving from here on, and I'm looking forward to being involved in its progression. There is so much that you as students are yet to experience around college, and I am excited about getting to know students even more and gaining confidence alongside you throughout the year.
Let’s get everybody talking. Let’s get everybody involved in something. Let's make a difference.
