The end of the year is approaching! Welcome to Decembers Newsletter. I hope that you are all looking forward to a fresh start in the new year and I hope that everybody has an amazing Christmas break. 🎄
In the short space of time since September, there has been a range of activity and impact across the college, which wouldn't be possible without the involvement from yourselves as students. We have had important conversations with the ITV News and MPs, ran a Share the Wear clothes shop, been to the NUS England Conference, ran our first SU campaign of the academic year and have set up the most clubs and societies the SU has ever ran!
If you are interested in participating in the college clubs and societies in the new year and even taking a lead on these, then don't hesitate to let us know! We want students to enjoy our clubs on offer to the fullest and provide us with ideas and feedback so that they can run in the best way possible. This also includes supporting with campaigns and events that we run across campus.
There is so much more in store to look out for, and we don't want you to miss it. Next March, we will be running our second campaign around a Culture Day event, and we can't wait to keep you all updated on everything that this will have to offer. We hope to see you there when this event approaches!

Louise Haigh MP Visit
On the 28th November, students gathered together to participate in a roundtable session with MP Louise Haigh enabling us to discuss relevant topics and issues across Sheffield and throughout students education, also linking to issues worldwide.
Through our conversations, we learnt about the dangers of AI and the positive impacts that this can also have, we gained knowledge on the key ways to gain confidence in public speaking, such as through authenticity, practicing your delivery and preparing thoroughly. We further understood the importance of transparency for politicians and we were introduced to the recent NDA legislation protecting victims of abuse. It was interesting to gain insight into Louise's thoughts and the changes that are already being made in parliament to create important changes.
Webinars
Within the Students’ Union, we recognise and understand that mental health is a big issue within both college and the world. We know that many of our students have experienced mental health issues and, having both just been students, we understand how these problems can impact your time at college. The college already has some mental health support implemented for students, so we want to make sure that students know where to find this.
We also want to make sure that the support offered is helpful and works for the students using it. Big changes take time but the SU is currently campaigning to find out what support you would like to see here at The Sheffield College. We are also creating a series of webinars on different mental health topics which provide information and advice about support services you can access. You can find these below.
In this webinar, Bella gives you 5 quick tips in 2 minutes for helping you to make sure your social media is a good place for your mind. As somebody who loves using social media herself, Bella wanted to make sure that the video wasn't the standard advice young people often get which is to just 'stop using social media' but instead has tips to help you enjoy the benefits while also looking after you mind.

👕🎄 Share the Wear 🎄👕
Clothes Shop
On Thursday 11th December, we held a Share the Wear winter event at City Campus. This was an opportunity for people to donate their pre-loved fashion and update their wardrobes sustainably. Every year, the UK sends 350,000,000 kgs of clothing waste to landfill, so it was great to be able to save some of this by passing on these items to others.
Throughout lunch time, we had lots of students and staff come and get themselves something new to wear and the best part was, it was free and good for the planet! The event was a great success and we would like to thank everyone who donated clothes and the students volunteers who helped the SU staff and Jess and Simon from the Environmental Sustainability Team. We can't wait to run more Share the Wear events in the spring - make sure you look out for them running in 2026!
