Introducing your new Students' Union President and Deputy President for the next academic year
In the next academic year, The Sheffield College Students' Union will have two full-time, paid members of the team - a Students' Union President and Students' Union Deputy President. We are hopeful that this increase in staff will help us offer more activities throughout the year for students, as well as being able to better support students and the improvement of student experience in the college.
Students have just elected these two roles - Georgia will be the Students' Union President, and Mohammed the Students' Union Deputy President. To learn more about them and what they are wanting to achieve over the next year, read their manifestos below.
Studying at College next year? Why not go for one of our voluntary SU Officer roles?!
While our SU President and Deputy President roles have been elected, our voluntary Officer roles will be elected in the the autumn term. This is a great opportunity to get involved in running activities for students, improving student experience, and looking amazing on CVs/UCAS applications.
The SU Structure shows all of the roles available - if you are interested in running for one of these or want to find our more, email us at studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk

Reflections on this academic year from the SU President, Leo...
"Hi all, as this is the last newsletter of the year I figured I should give you all an overview of everything that happened this year.
In October I started my role as Students Union President and got the most votes recorded in our Students' Union in years!
In November I ran the first big campaign of the year in memory of Brianna Ghey and to insure to you all thatour campuses will always be inclusive and accessible for all students. I also won the Equality and Diversity youth champion award at Sheffield Youth Voice Awards.
In December I partnered with Dudley SU, Sheffield Hallam University SU and University of Sheffield SU to send an email to National Union of Students’ Equality and Diversity Officer to ask what their doing about what the Prime Minister said about changing guidelines in schools and colleges about how to address students who are gender queer."
"In January we started planning how and when to set up a book club for you all to chat with other students about books you enjoy and would recommend which started in February.
In February we submitted a policy ready for National Conference which was backed by Dudley SU, National Society of Apprentices and Leeds City College. We also ran our second big campaign of the year around mental health called Time To Talk Sheffcol to support students and staff with mental health and show our support internally and externally. We also participated and hosted a cross college competition as part of Association of Colleges Colleges Week 2024.
In March we submitted our votes for who should go to the Queer Students Awards and we also hosted a well-being day where over 150 of you attended and took part in various activities.
In April we went to NUS National Conference in Blackpool where we fought for FE rights alongside Bernie Savage, Jack from Dudley SU, Qasim from Leeds City College and Sue from the National Society of Apprentices where we won and our policy passed!
In May we hosted a one time well-being cafe for Thai students for the Turing Scheme to show them what type of things we run here for our students and they loved it!
This month we have ran 2 pride events with free cupcakes, film screenings and activities as well as having SayIt come in and talk to students."

Pride at The Sheffield College
We recently hosted Pride events at City and Hillsborough campuses, and they were so much fun, thank you to everyone who got involved! Here's Leo's reflections of the events:
"We hosted these events to not only show our support for our queer students but also to show that we care and we want the students to feel welcomed, appreciated and loved. We also understand that students may not have money to do pride things that Sheffield itself hosts and therefore we made a smaller cheaper version that students found easy to access and be apart of.
We had free cupcakes, free film screenings, SayIt come in and chat to students, LRC show off and loan out some of their pride themed books, and more.
We also had activities ran by your SU! These included rainbow hands, which was creating a rainbow of hand prints from our students, a ping pong ball game where students could answer pride themed questions, and I did some free face painting!
The event went really well, it was really fun and I think all the students that came along enjoyed it and thought it went well too, the staff enjoyed it, it was overall an amazing way to celebrate pride month and end the year."
