Have Your Voice Heard in the General Election!
There will be a General Election on 4th July.
One of the key values that The Sheffield College (especially the Students' Union) encourages among students is ‘Active Citizenship’ both within and outside of the College. Voting in elections is a key way to be an active citizen and have your say in democratic processes that will affect you. We highly encourage you to register to vote, and if you are eligible, to vote on 4th July.
Register to vote - To vote in the General Election, you have until 18th June to register to vote. You can register to vote if you are 16 or older (although you cannot vote in England until you are 18) and it only takes 5 minutes.
You can also register to vote by post or to have someone vote on your behalf - if you want to do this, please be aware that the deadlines are different (you can find out more below). Make sure you are registered, and that all of your information is up to date!
Voter ID - You now need a valid form of ID to vote, this includes a passport or driving license. The accepted photo IDs can be found here
If you don't have one of these, you can apply for a FREE form of valid ID before 20th June by clicking below.
The College is also hoping to host a Hustings Event in June - this is where local political candidates will answer questions posed by audience members. If you are interested in attending should this event go ahead, please email us at studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk
More information about who the candidates standing in your area and who you will be able to vote for can be found below - happy voting!
May Campaign Recap and Resources
In May, the Students' Union ran a campaign called 'Power In Education' which focused on supporting students on the autism spectrum and with ADHD. The campaign was to make students more aware of support available inside and outside of College, as well as making sure that staff are getting appropriate training to support these students.
Some resources that may be be useful are below!
The Sheffield Mental Health Guide is a great resource where you can search for and find out about different support services available locally.
Keyring supports people to gain independence and skills through activities and support work.
Sheffield Flourish supports mental health by offering free events and activities, from football, to theatre, to gardening.
Opportunity for Students to Share Lived Experiences
As part of this campaign, the Students' Union President, Leo, has also been working to make sure training for College staff is available that has a focus on supporting students who are on the Autism spectrum or have ADHD.
On the College staff training and development days in July, there is going to be a session focused on this, and we are looking for some students to come along who are willing to share their lived experiences.
If you are interested in this opportunity to share your story and support this training, please email studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk
Free Period Products available in toilets on campus!
The College has been providing free period products to learners through the Department for Education scheme. These are available from reception desks at all campuses, and from 'help yourself' boxes in Upper Student Central at City, next to reception and in the LRC at Hillsborough.
We have recently taken a step to make these products more accessible to students, by trialing a free dispenser in the female toilets opposite the refectory at City campus. This is in response to student feedback, about making the products easy to access when they are needed. If this trial goes well, we are planning to expand this into more toilets across campuses.
Packs of period products are still available from all of the locations mentioned above.

These will be ran by our wonderful Students' Union Vice President, Sharon. She had this to say about the Cafès:
"I got involved in the Students' Union to make a difference .
The Well-Being Cafès are good for students from different walks of life to get together and relax. Students can attend, to put their classes to one side, do something different over lunchtime and meet new people."
They will be every Wednesday 1:30-2:30pm, in the room at the LRC at City campus.

This will start on Thursday 1st February and run once a month in the Study Room in the City LRC.
We are looking at expanding this to other campuses - let us know if you want to see it at your campus by emailing studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk
After the success of last year's British Sign Language Basics sessions, they are back again.
Taught by a student, they will take place every Monday 12:30-1pm in room C106 at Hillsborough campus.
This is a great opportunity to have so fun, learn something new and make friends - all welcome!
