Welcome everyone to April's Newsletter! I hope you all had a great Easter Break and an amazing start to the new term.
There are so many exciting things taking place and that are ahead of us to look out for, like the final SU campaign of the year, new clubs and societies on offer to all of you, Wellbeing Events for Safer Campus Week, updated Sports Enrichment Activities and so much more! The NUS England Conference was a huge event that the SU were involved in that took place at the beginning of this month on the 3rd April. It was an amazing opportunity for the SU to be present at this conference, alongside a range of other colleges and universities SU's that were present to voice their students' views and beliefs. In result, it gave us so much insight into how we can continue to create awareness around college and create visibility to important issues, as well as provide support for students through anything that they're struggling with. The conference influenced how our college SU will continue to move forward, so this was an amazing way to begin April for our SU!
Global Accessibility Week is nearly here! This week at our college is all about making the Sheffield College website more accessible to students. This is so that the website is easier to navigate around and allows students to have their say on what can be improved, creating an improved start to their year at college in September. As the SU President, I was inspired to push this idea forward when hearing feedback from several of yourselves as students and staff members on how students who are from SEND, are international or who are studying in specific sectors at the college can benefit from a website that has visible changes, as well as providing ways that students can access content more easily. It is important to run a week like this so that you can all access relevant information linked to your college experience, and feel supported to the fullest through your studies.
In order to do this, it is important that you all have your say and share your thoughts and views on what you feel would be important to involve on the website that isn't visible already, or what changes can be made to make it even better.
Please contact the Students Union, we are looking forward to hearing what you think and to this week starting at college!

NUS Conference
Georgia, SU President and Liss, Women's Officer's thoughts on the NUS Conference
NUS was a wonderfully engaging experience, full of thought-provoking discussions with a range of Student Unions all across England. This event took place at Bishop Grosseteste University, and Sheffield College was honoured to represent our vibrant city and to be a voice for our community. there was lots of interesting workshops and conversations to learn from based around many issues surrounding students. topics included women's safety within the education system, equity and equality, community inclusivity, bus travel and food expenses and what makes a strong and united student union.
Our Student Union put forward a submission surrounding the importance of mental health support within our college, and for our students to have access to regular counselling should they need it. As student representatives, it was important to us to ensure that students are aware of the services that are available and how this can benefit them, therefore improving their experience at college. From putting this forward, we are hoping to see an increase of students reaching out to access the appropriate services the college provides.
We felt that NUS was an eye opening experience, and it was a great opportunity to be able to connect with different people from different backgrounds and walks of life. We were able to share ideas and gained an abundance of insight by hearing how different SU's function all over England. The experience gave us a clearer vision towards how we can improve our own SU. We left Lincoln with our heads bursting with ideas, feeling inspired by the remarkable leaders that led the workshops and advocated on behalf of what they believe in.
Student volunteers are going to be running a donation drive this term for SheffCol Community Kitchen. The community kitchen collects donations and then distributes food packs out to students who need them. Items that can be donated are listed below and can be delivered to the donation boxes at the different campuses.
You can email communitykitchen@sheffcol.ac.uk if you need a food pack - no questions asked.
We are also looking to widen our team of student volunteers, which is a great opportunity to get some volunteering experience that is flexible and can fit around your course, while having a huge impact in the local community.
Volunteering as part of this project will look amazing on CVs or UCAS applications and will help you build the employability skills and experience you need to be successful in your progression and future career. You can do as little or as much as you want, every hour counts!
If you would like to get involved in volunteering in this project, please email studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk
SHEAF Mentoring Scheme – Fantastic opportunity for young female students to be mentored by local leaders
The college has collaborated with SHEAF (a local women in leadership network) and Sheffield City Council’s ‘See it, Be it’ to create a mentoring opportunity for young female college students. The SHEAF Mentoring Program is supported by a diverse group of professionals who are committed to guiding and inspiring young women in their educational and career journeys. Our mentors bring valuable experience, industry knowledge, and leadership skills to help mentees develop confidence, set goals, and navigate career pathways.
The key to this project is aspiration for students, allowing them to tap into the wisdom and guidance (both professional skills and ‘soft’ life skills) of our mentors.
This project is launching with three group mentor sessions – one a month in May and June – the dates of which are below:
Wednesday 14th May 2-4pm (venue to be confirmed)
Thursday 19th June 2-4pm (venue to be confirmed)
This is an amazing opportunity to connect with local leaders in Sheffield, and to learn from them. The sessions will be fairly informal, with lots of space for discussion and conversations. Any travel costs that may incur from attending the sessions, the college can support with, and we can help excuse you from lessons if necessary to attend.
The opportunity is open to students who self-identify as a woman or minority gender and are 16-25 years old. Please fill out the form below to sign up for the project!

Come to Well-Being Spaces for a quiet place to relax over lunchtime
These are ran by students, and the info below is from Emmanuel (one of the student's who lead on the well-being spaces)....
"This is a space where you can escape from the college population and experience mindfulness—a quiet space to mellow out. Run by a student, it was created to provide a place where students can take an hour to unwind and relieve the pressures of education. This initiative is part of the wider Youth Social Action program, aimed at promoting wellbeing for young people.
The Wellbeing Space at City campus takes place in the study room in the LRC 12-1pm on Wednesdays and at Hillsborough campus in room A017 12-1pm on Thursdays. We are also planning a tutorial session on exam stress and coping strategies, offering practical tips to manage academic pressure. If you're interested in attending or getting involved as an ambassador, you can contact studentsunion@sheffcol.ac.uk to express your interest."
Mondays in room A102

Student Feedback on proposed changes to Students' Union Officer roles - please fill in short survey
The Students' Union is led by a team of Students' Union Officers. These are voluntary roles that students can nominate themselves and be elected for to carry out alongside their studies (with the exception of the paid, full-time roles of President and Deputy President). This team then represent the study body at the college, and work towards improving student experience, through meeting with staff, running activities, clubs and campaigns on issues that matter to students.
It is important, therefore, that the Officer roles in the Students' Union are kept up to date and reflective of the student body. Based on student voice feedback over the past academic year, we are proposing some changes to the roles available, to make sure that students are fully and accurately represented by the team. The current team of Students' Un, ion Officers have contributed towards these suggestions, as well as other verbal Student Voice feedback that has been gathered through our work so far this year.
Any changes to the Students' Union structure must have student support, so please take the time to fill out this short survey to have your say.
Below you will find the current team structure and the proposed new one.
