🎉 Happy New Year everyone! 🎉
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas break and are keeping an eye out for everything the new year is going to bring! A new year jam packed full of opportunities to get involved in exciting projects like events, campaigns, clubs and societies and important updates on what the SU are currently working on, as well as what other teams are getting up to in the college.
We are also pleased to announce the second campaign of the year to you all following from the mental health campaign which will be taking place in March as a cross campus celebration event. There is more information all about this below, with what you should look out for, dates and how you can get involved!
The SU are doing ongoing work around the mental health campaign that we are always open to taking your suggestions from, with our third webinar within the newsletter with 5 tips on how to make social media a good place for your mind.
We have taken your feedback from the mental health webinars on board to ensure that we achieve the goal of making these more tailored to students wants and needs.
16th-27th March
What should you look out for?
Throughout March, the Students Union will be running a Cultures Connect campaign across all campuses for students: City, Hillsborough, Fir Vale, Peaks, Pennine Five and ATC!
The SU are planning a variety of events running throughout this cultural celebration between Monday 16th March and Friday 27th March, all to bring students together and to celebrate the diversity within The Sheffield College.
There will be an event hosted at each campus from 10am-2pm throughout the two weeks with student led stalls and access to cultural foods, music playing from different cultures, a photobooth, a cultural art competition, lantern making and so much more!
There will also be an Eid Celebration event taking place which is being organised by the Muslim Womens' Society within the SU, so please keep a look out for this and for updates involving this huge cultural event!
As the SU want this event to involve a range of cultures, we want to hear all about your ideas and support.
If you would like to:

Come and relax and socialise in the LGBTQ+ society! This club offers a safe space for students within the LGBTQ+ community to spend their lunchtime. The great thing about this society is that it is student led – this means that the activities are decided by the students. From playing games together, crafts, chilling or getting involved in LGBTQ+ campaigns, the decision is in your hands.

Focus Group Invitation - Course Portal
We’re planning to redesign The Sheffield College course portal (here), the pages where you search for courses and decide what to apply for. The current portal has been around for a long time, and we want to make sure the new version actually works for new and current students like you.
This session is about hearing your honest opinions on the current course portal, what helps you, what gets in the way, and what could be better.
The new course portal should:
Be easy to use on your phone as well as a laptop
Make it quick to find courses that match your interests
Explain courses clearly, without jargon or confusing language
Be accessible for everyone, including students with different needs
Help you feel confident about whether a course is right for you
Your feedback will help us design something that’s clearer, faster, and less frustrating.
In this session, we’ll ask about:
How you search for courses and what you expect to see
Whether course pages are clear, helpful, and easy to understand
What information feels missing or hard to find
How the portal feels to use on your phone
Anything that puts you off applying or makes you give up
There are no right or wrong answers, we want your real experiences, not what you think we want to hear. Everything you share will help us make the course portal better for future students.
The focus group will be on Monday 23rd February 1:30-2:30pm at City campus. Please let us know if you want to attend by emailing studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk
SEND Voices Network
Are you a student at the college who receives support from the SEND team or identifies as having a disability? We have connected with other colleges across South Yorkshire to form a SEND voices network - a space where learners can meet and discuss their experiences. This group also is hoping to make improvements in SEND student voice across colleges in the longer term, with the aim being “to build a stronger, more inclusive South Yorkshire—one where every young person with SEND is heard, represented, and empowered.”
As part of this, the group is working to gather experiences from students with SEND in college. Please contact studentvoice@sheffcol.ac.uk to be involved or share your experiences!

Sheffield Smokefree Service - free weekly clinic
Sheffield Smokefree Service are hoping to set up a free on-site weekly clinic at City campus to provide free smoking cessation support and also medication to help reduce withdrawal symptoms. For this to happen, we need at least six people to be referred to the Smokefree Service via college, rather than people contacting the Smokefree Service directly.
Please contact Liz Roscoe, the Smokefree Project Co-ordinator, to be referred or for further information Liz.Roscoe@sheffcol.ac.uk
SHEAF Mentoring Project for young women
SHEAF is a network of women in and around Sheffield who are leaders in their respective fields. We have been working with the network to create the opportunity for them to mentor some of our female learners (aged 16-25), running group sessions as well as 1-to-1 mentoring, which may include experiences of work and sharing of experiences and knowledge. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from and connect with some incredibly successful women in the city, and an opportunity unique to students at the college!
