Hi everyone! It's Georgia here, your Student Union President. After a busy month of visiting your classrooms to update you on what's going on in the Students Union and Student Voice, as well as campaign planning, running clubs and societies and the election for SU Officers, we've finished our first term. I hope you have all settled in, are enjoying your studies and are making new friends.
Taking place in the SU Officer election which you can discover more information about when reading on, we have pieces from Katherine next, who is here to introduce herself and discuss important topics that she is passionate about. Katherine will discuss how these topics are impacting students this month around college and well as the effects these are having globally.
Katherine and I share similar views and outlooks, allowing us to collaborate with one another throughout this Newsletter. Make sure to look out for more pieces from her in the upcoming months!
Next month after half term is when our the first campaign will be held, Sign Language and Accessibility, that will be ran across City and Hillsborough College for any students to attend. Across college, I have heard students discuss how they have always wanted to learn sign language, and I am aware that sign language is widely taught across schools and universities. It has always interested me in understanding how sign language is taught as well as the challenges and experiences that those who are deaf face, so to hear that it interests you, the students, makes me keen to push this forward and run as our first campaign.
The aim of this campaign is to break down barriers between students. There will be a variety of resources accessible to students, where our students who use British Sign Language (BSL) across college will be running two stalls so that you as students can get involved in learning sign language basics.
I want students to feel as though they want to learn sign language further after being engaged and involved in both stalls that will be displayed with sign language resources provided, such as learning the alphabet from A-Z, key words and, as well as include promotion of the Sign Language Club that takes place through Hillsborough College on Thursdays 12:30-1pm in the Innovation Suite. This club is free and any students can come along and take part!
Through this campaign, I want students to see that communicating with those who are a part of the deaf community isn't something to feel apprehensive about. Therefore, this is important so students see how sign language should be embraced and something that is a strength in enhancing our communication skills and increasing confidence while learning.
My name is Katherine and I’m currently studying English Literature, Sociology and Media Studies at city campus. My favourite things to do in my free time is: reading, writing, fashion, cooking, journaling and spending time with my dogs, family and friends.
Since being a student rep and elected for environmental student officer, I want to be a voice for pupils and be able to use their opinions to influence and change the college for the better. I want to raise awareness of issues happening outside of college so pupils are aware of it so they can contribute change to society by helping out.
Furthermore, I will bring my feminism and environmental beliefs to the college to make college a safer place for everybody by raising queries and issues within and outside of college. I want to influence others in society for the better.
Hurricane Milton
Hurricane Milton struck the west coast of Florida on October 9th 2024 bringing widespread destruction including severe flooding, storm surges, tornadoes and power outages affecting millions of homes and businesses. The winds reached up to 120 mph and led to a mass evacuation and over 3 million homes and businesses were knocked out as a result.
Thousands of sheltered animals faced the impact of the Hurricane. In Chester County, the wings of the rescue flight landed Saturday afternoon and rescued nearly 100 animals taking them far away from the disaster zone that left these innocent animals vulnerable. Fortunately due to the flight, animals have found a safe haven at various Brandywine Valley SPCA locations.
Climate change has spurred marine heat waves across the world therefore meaning hurricanes bring more intense rainfall since it comes from tropical areas.
Search and rescue team have conducted over 4,200 rescues and assist. 50,000 workers are restoring power despite over 2 million residents still in the dark.
Our human actions are causing animals to relocate and experience the consequence of human actions when they have just as more of right to live a peaceful life on this earth as much as humans.
If we’re to end or try to resolve climate change we need to be aware of our carbon footprint and our action as a whole.
Students' Union Officer Election
The SU Officer roles are voluntary roles that you, the students, run. Students put themselves forward, which are supported by the SU President and staff to run activities and make a difference.
The election for these roles has taken place this month, which closed on 23rd October. This election enabled students to have their say in choosing who they would like to be officers to represent Sheffield College.
SU Officers are here to allow student's opinions to be heard and to raise awareness on important topics that may effect students at college. They are here to make a change.
Clubs and Societies
Below is the updated Clubs and Societies sheet, including a variety of different clubs that are accessible to all students across Sheffield College. This far, engagement for these clubs has been extremely positive, especially throughout table tennis that many of you have remained eager to get involved in. If students have any suggestions for clubs and societies that they would like to see around college that they would be interested in, then please feel free to let us know! The contact details for the Students Union are below, or you can always visit our offices.
At City, we are located in the Upper Student Central, and in Hillsborough, the office behind reception. Feel free to ask reception if you would like a chat or have any concerns.
Find out more about 'Green Careers' by attending this exciting event!
A green career can be any job, role or occupation that contributes to preserving or restoring the environment and our planet – and not just the obvious ones that come to mind such as ecologist or retrofit construction workers.
Increasingly, a wide variety of business roles such as marketing, procurement or events need green skills, and roles managing the environmental impacts of industries such as hospitality, performing arts and public services – in fact, every job will need to be a ‘green job’ if we are to reach the Government’s Net Zero 2050 targets.
In this event you will hear from a panel of speakers who work in varying industries and are leading the way in sustainability in their specific sectors. You will have the opportunity to really understand what these jobs are, how to get into them and the skills you may need. There will also be time for questions of each panellist.

This workshop will be a good opportunity for all students to understand how they will be able to influence the business they work for in the future or if they set up their own businesses how they will be able to adopt social enterprise.
Student Voice is at the heart of what we do in the Student Participation Team. We are passionate about making sure students' voices and opinions are heard and listened to, not just in college, but by key decision makers outside of the college too.
We are really excited to be hosted two Q&A sessions in November, one with Sheffield Central Member of Parliament Abtisam Mohamed, and another with Leader of Sheffield City Council Tom Hunt.
This is an amazing opportunity to hear from politicians that represent Sheffield, and would look amazing on UCAS applications or CVs, showing initiative to take part in activities seperate from your studies.
