What is poverty?

  • Task 1: Individually, write down one colour, draw one symbol and create one image to represent poverty (Slide 3). You should create a Google Doc and use Google Drawing to construct the image and/or symbol.
  • You can find some versions of the task done by students last year in the attachments section below.

  • Task 2: Create a word cloud using the word poverty and related terms - you can use Word cloud application Word Art (https://wordart.com/). See below for an exemplar
  • Questions that can help you with your word web:
  1. What are the characteristics of poverty? How can you tell if someone is poor?
  2. What images does the word ‘poverty’ create in your mind?
  3. What do you think are some of the causes of poverty?
  • Task 3: Photo Analysis (Slide 7).
  • Each group will be provided with a photo depicting poverty. For each photo you will need to answer the following questions in the shared google doc:
  1. Where do you think these people live (country/location)?
  2. Do you think these people/children live in poverty? If so, what dimensions of poverty are they affected by?
  3. What aspects of the photo tell you this (relate to Q2)?
  4. What do you think may have caused the poverty?
  5. Who is responsible for helping them?
