Second and fourth Tuesdays of March and April 2017
In this PLT, we will discuss Siddhartha Mukherjee--a practicing oncologist’s--award winning book Emperor of All Maladies. We will explore our understanding of cancer from the time of the ancient Greeks to today. Modern advances in surgical technique, drug therapy, and gene editing are products of the centuries of research covered in this book. Mukherjee’s book combines science and storytelling, and weaves in the complex relationships that often develop between doctor and patient. An exploration of medical ethics, current research, and the societal effects of this disease make this a compelling and surprisingly uplifting read.
