Good Morning Art-
Your message has been forwarded to me as I am collecting the information on PLTs:
So, to summarize, we would like to get an update of all the great work PLTs are doing across the state. To do that, we are asking for three things:
We are hoping to have all of this information by 10/27.
To help PLTs with the writing of their descriptions, I am pasting 3 examples below that embrace the type of descriptions we desire:
Literacy
This PLT will focus on all aspects of scientific literacy, including prose, document and quantitative forms of literacy. Originally recognized as early as 1958, strong scientific literacy skills ensure a population capable of making educated, well-informed decisions. These skills apply across all disciplines, science, math, technology, engineering and the arts. Strategies for infusing literacy into STEAM content and best practices for incorporating literacy skills into classroom activities will be shared. Classroom implementation of contemporary, engaging texts including graphic novels, research articles and other science-based media will be pursued. This PLT will be led by Diane Willard and Amy Graves-DeMario.
Middle Level Science
The Middle Level Science PLT is focused on the development and implementation of STEAM based activities aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards. Members work collaboratively to overcome the widest gaps in the STEAM classroom: Lack of funding and resources; limited exposure to current technology; lack of real-life application; disconnect among related subjects within STEAM; problems with integrating STEAM into other subjects; and limited amount of time to apply STEAM in the classroom. This PLT will be led by Anthony Schabloski.
Gamification and Technology
Gamefication, or game-based learning, is applying principles of (video) game design to instructional scaffolding. We will work to define gamefication and discuss how it can be designed for use in the classroom. specifically we will focus on the concepts that learning should be compelling, failure is a valid technique, and progression can be leveled. We will research different techniques and new technology tools that can be used to effectively implement it. We will also evaluate different gaming strategies. Meetings will be on the fourth wednesday of each month.
I also post the definition we are using as a program from PLTs to help with the process:
PLTs (Professional Learning Teams) are small teams of teachers who meet together regularly to collaboratively learn, investigate, and implement best practices. Engaging in a PLT is a deliberate process that requires regular participation and a willingness to move beyond sharing lessons and ideas to critically examining practice, research, and implementation.
Please let me know how I can support your efforts, and please ask the Master Teachers in the PLTs to do this work.
Once you have collected the information, you can just email/share directly to me.
Thank you,
Dom
