  • Registration Link to the STEM + TEAM = STEAM Conference 2017

It is most important that each Master Teacher register by February 10th. On the 11th of February the link will go live to all area educators. In order to accommodate all we have capped the participation at 100. This number is not inclusive of NCMTs' however once the link goes live if you have not registered you will risk being shut out as others register. If you are planning to attend please register this week. Thank you!

  • Science @ 30 City

Information below for the popular Science talks offered by area educators:

Science at 30City kicks off again this coming Monday evening at 5:30pm with a repeat of the inaugural talk by Dr. Joel D. Parker “Death and Darwin - Why Evolution Does Not Save Us from Aging”.

When: 5:30 - 7 p.m., Monday, February 6, 2017

Where: The Champlain Wine Company at 30 City Hall Place, Plattsburgh, NY

Who: Dr. Joel D. Parker, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences

What: Science@30City.

Dr. Parker, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at SUNY Plattsburgh will present “Death and Darwin – Why Evolution Does Not Save Us from Aging” on Monday February 6th at 5:30 pm at The Champlain Wine Company. Despite 50+ years of intense research, science has failed to bring to market even one drug proven to slow aging. Why has aging proven impossible to treat despite so much effort? The answer lies in understanding how lifespans evolve over evolutionary time. Dr. Parker will explore how evolution has complicated the quest to find a pharmacological treatment for aging. Recent evidence against antioxidants and drugs that imitate caloric restriction as aging treatments will also be presented.

NOTE TO SCIENCE TEACHERS

I will be presenting the basics of the theory of evolution in this talk using the Google map timeline method that I published in the Journal of College Science

Teaching (http://joelparcoeur.com/pdfs/Parker%202011.pdf, and see http://joelparcoeur.com/pdfs/Parker_Science%202011.pdf). This will be a good opportunity for your students to get another round of evolutionary theory and to see what might be a novel way to you of teaching the magnitude of deep time.
