Homework:

1. Read "The Custom-House" (the Preface) and Chapter 1 of The Scarlet Letter while finding two to three quotes from each that explicitly describe the setting and that have rich diction—this might describe the town of Boston (or the town of Salem, which Hawthorne discusses in the preface), the buildings, the roads, the nature within the town, the nature surrounding the town, and so on.

Outcome Goals:

1. Complete the anticipation guide that's found on Google Classroom in order to begin to think about some of the issues and themes that will arise in The Scarlet Letter.

2. Begin reading The Scarlet Letter: "The Custom House" (Preface) and Chapter 1 while finding two to three quotes on setting from each section.

First Thing:

1. Get a Chromebook and a copy of The Scarlet Letter (purple for 1st period and brown for 8th period)

2. Continue to hold your discussions and take notes on The Scarlet Letter Anticipation Guide.

Agenda:

1. Once your conversations have come to an end and you have completed the anticipation chart, start reading "The Custom House" and Chapter 1.

2. Use sticky notes to mark two to three quotes from "The Custom-House" (the Preface), and two to three quotes from "The Prison Door" (Chapter 1), that explicitly describe the setting and that have rich diction. Remember, this might describe the town of Boston (or the town of Salem, which Hawthorne discusses in the preface), the buildings, the roads, the nature within the town, the nature surrounding the town, and so on.

For instance, I might mark and take a closer look at the very first line from "The Prison Door":

“A throng of bearded men, in sad-coloured garments and grey steeple-crowned hats, inter-mixed with women, some wearing hoods, and others bareheaded, was assembled in front of a wooden edifice, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and studded with iron spikes.”
