Unit 1 Skill Focus

1.A READING: Identify and describe components of the rhetorical situation: the exigence, audience, writer, purpose, context, and message.

4.B READING: Identify and describe the overarching thesis of an argument and any indication it provides of the argument's structure.

4.B WRITING: Write a thesis statement that requires proof or defense and that may preview the structure of the argument.

4.A WRITING: Develop a paragraph that includes a claim and evidence supporting the claim.

Homework:

1. Finish finish the Google Classroom assignment 50 Essays: BRENT STAPLES "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space" and submit by 11:59, Monday.

Outcome Objective:

1. Work toward completing the 50 Essays: BRENT STAPLES "Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space" assignment which is found on Google Classroom.

First Thing:

1. Get a Chromebook from up front and go to Google Classroom to start the Brent Staples assignment.

Write an essay in which you analyze how Brent Staples appeals to his original audience, the readers of Ms. magazine. How does he keep from antagonizing them or making them feel accused? Or does he? Pay particular attention to his use of examples, his reference to a counterargument, and his diction.

2. In the event that you finish the Staples assignment, move on the the “Television: The Plug-In Drug” drug assignment, which is also on Google Classroom.
