Homework:
1. Read through page 71 (up to Part II) of Between the World and Me.
2. Finish the logical fallacies question
Outcome Goals:
1. Apply understanding of deductive reasoning (syllogism and enthymeme) to Coates's rhetoric and then use the rhetorical handbook to further analyze Between the World and Me.
First Thing:
1. Get a Chromebook
Agenda:
1. Paste Question Set 4 into your Between the World and Me response sheet.
A look at deductive reasoning:
—Syllogism:
A is B (major premise); B is C (minor premise); therefore, A must be C (conclusion).
Socrates (A) is a man (B); All men (B) are mortal (C); therefore, Socrates (A) must be mortal (C)
—Enthymeme (major or minor premise is omitted because it is strongly implied)
Socrates is a man (major); therefore, Socrates must be mortal.
All men are mortal (minor premise); therefore, Socrates is mortal.
A) Work together on part A and B of the question set
B) Complete C and D in pairs
2. Look for other rhetorical devices and put page #/paragraph# under the name of the rhetorical device.
