Unit 1 Skill Focus

1.A READING: Identify and describe components of the rhetorical situation: the exigence, audience, writer, purpose, context, and message.

3.A READING: Identify and explain claims and evidence within an argument.

4.B READING: Identify and describe the overarching thesis of an argument. and any indication it provides of the argument's structure.

4.B WRITING: Write a thesis statement that requires proof or defense and that may preview the structure of the argument.

4.A WRITING: Develop a paragraph that includes a claim and evidence supporting the claim.

Outcome Objective:

1. Use the AP Argument Rubric and student examples to score and discuss previously written arguments for the "Leadership and Solitude" prompt

First Thing:

1. Get the handouts from up front: AP Language and Composition Skills, AP Argument Rubric, and student examples

2. Read through the rubric and then read through the examples

Agenda:

1. Go over AP Language and Composition Skills

2. A look at the rubric in the context of the student examples

3. Group work in scoring the student examples

4. Class share of findings
