3.A READING: Identify and explain claims and evidence within an argument.

4.B READING: Identify and describe the overarching thesis of an argument and any indication it provides of the argument's structure.

4.B WRITING: Write a thesis statement that requires proof or defense and that may preview the structure of the argument.

4.A WRITING: Develop a paragraph that includes a claim and evidence supporting the claim.

Homework:

1. Complete the PAPA Square

Outcome Objective:

1. Further analyzing and discussing "My Dungeon Shook" by using the discussion questions and the PAPA Square.

First Thing:

1. With your squad (the three to four people around you) discuss the following questions regarding The Fire Next Time:

What is the significance of the book’s title, the titles of its two sections, and the epigraphs that precede the book itself and the second letter?

How does Baldwin personalize history and the issue of black oppression in the United States? Does this personalizing result in too narrow a focus or does it intensify his account’s impact and our response?

What is Baldwin’s purpose in prefacing the long "public" essay-letter on the Nation of Islam with his shorter, personal letter to his nephew?

— I will be passing back papers during this time

Agenda:

1. Discussion share out—What question did your squad spend the greatest amount of time on and to what end?

2. Work on completing the PAPA Square to analyze Baldwin's "My Dungeon Shook"

3. Further review and annotate The Fire Next Time. Look for shifts in content or theme.
