St. Mary’s Tournament

Junior (Grade 9 and under) Debating Tournament

Time: Wednesday, Nov 16, 2011. Registration will be from 5 until 5:20 PM. There will be 2 rounds. The tournament should end at around 8:30 PM. Students should have eaten before attending – dinner will not be provided. There will be snacks provided between rounds.

Location: St. Mary’s Academy

Resolution: This house would ban reality TV.

Speaking times will be a maximum of 6 minutes for constructive speeches and 3 minutes for rebuttals. There is no minimum time. Heckling is not allowed. Points of order, personal privilege and information are allowed in the open category but not in novice. Novice Debaters are students in their first year of interschool debating.

Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams. If there is enough interest, there may be novice, open, and grade 9 novice categories. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate this on the form and I will let you know on Nov 14. Schools must bring one judge per team. Students in grade 10 and older may judge. In conjunction with the tournament we are hosting a session on how to organize and run a Tabs room- for coaches. Those wanting to attend should make sure they bring enough judges so that they are not needed to judge themselves as we will be running the session during the debates. Please email Allison if you will be attending the Tabs room seminar.
