Marian Cup 2016

Grade 9-12 Debating Tournament

Time: Wednesday, April 27. Registration will be from 3:45 until 4:15 PM. Awards should be at 8:30. There will be snacks and food provided between rounds. Students with dietary issues should bring their own food.

Location: St. Mary’s Academy

Resolution: Three rounds of impromptu debates. Each of the three different resolutions will relate to the general theme of medical issues. Some light research is recommended so that students are familiar with the subject area. Students will have 1 hour to prepare all 3 resolutions.

Speaking times will be a maximum of 6 minutes for constructive speeches and 3 minutes for rebuttals. There is no minimum time. Heckling is not allowed. Points of order, personal privilege and information are allowed.

The Marian Cup is the major internal competition for St. Mary’s teams, so there will be a large number of St. Mary’s teams, but we are able to open it up to external teams as well. Most schools will be debating against St. Mary’s teams. Other schools may send a maximum of 3 teams. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so, please indicate that when you register and we will let you know on April 25. Schools should bring at least one judge per school, and one per two-person team would be great, but is not essential. If you do not have copies of the rules, they are available on the MSDA website at https://sites.google.com/site/manitobadebate/home

Please register your school on or before Friday, April 22.
