Sr Provincials

Senior High Provincial Debating Championships

Grades 10, 11 and 12 (very experienced grade 9’s may also enter)

Time: Tuesday, March 5th. Registration will be from 5 to 5:15 PM. The awards will be presented by 9:30 PM. Dinner will not be provided so competitors should eat before the tournament.

Location: St. John’s-Ravenscourt School, 400 South Drive, Winnipeg

Resolution: There will be 2 prepared parliamentary rounds (students will debate both sides) on the resolution “BIRT First Nations peoples would be better off without Reserves”, and 1 impromptu round. Debaters are reminded that respect for all peoples and cultures is expected. The rules are on the MSDA site at https://sites.google.com/site/manitobadebate/home.

The four to six top teams in this competition will represent Manitoba at the National Debate Championships in Calgary from April 26-28, provided that they are in the top half of the tournament and meet the other requirements. Normally we do not send more than one team from any one school, provided that there are enough teams in the top half of the tournament. To be eligible for the Senior Nationals, a school must be a member of the MSDA and must participate in this qualifying tournament. Students selected for the Senior Nationals will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs.

In addition, the top team per school will be eligible to attend the Donahoe Cup tournament in Halifax, April 12th – 14th. Teams that are selected for the Sr. Nationals may not go to the Donahoe Cup as well but the next best team from those schools can attend the Donahoe. Again, students selected for the Donahoe will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs.

Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams plus 1 team for every MSDA tournament hosted this year. Since this is a qualifying tournament, there will not be a novice category. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so please indicate this on the form and we will let you know on March 1 if space is available. Schools must bring one judge per team. High school students may not be judges. If this causes great problems for you, please let me know and it may be possible to make other arrangements.
