Sr Provincials 14-15

Grades 10, 11 and 12

Time: Sunday, March 15th. Registration is from 12:30 to 1 PM. The awards will be presented by 5 PM.

Location: St. John’s-Ravenscourt School, 400 South Drive, Winnipeg

Resolution: There will be 2 prepared parliamentary rounds (students will debate both sides) on the resolution “BIRT Canada adopt a system of proportional representation for parliamentary elections”, and 1 impromptu round. The rules are here on the MSDA site or go to https://sites.google.com/site/manitobadebate/ and follow the links to the parliamentary rules

The top 6 teams in this competition will represent Manitoba at the National Debate Championships in Toronto from April 24-27 (these dates could vary by a day – they have not sent the invitation yet), with no more than 1 team per school until all schools with teams in the top half of the tournament are sending 1 team. To be eligible for the Senior Nationals, a school must be a member of the MSDA prior to the tournament and must participate in this qualifying tournament. Students selected for the Senior Nationals will have to pay a fee to cover registration costs.

In addition, the top team per school will be eligible to attend the Donahoe Cup tournament in Halifax, April 17th – 19th, unless their school has decided to choose their Donahoe team in some other way. Teams that are selected for the Sr. Nationals may not go to the Donahoe Cup as well but the next best team from those schools can attend the Donahoe. Again, students selected for the Donahoe will have to pay a fee to cover travel and registration costs.

Schools may send a maximum of 3 teams plus 1 team for every MSDA tournament (i.e. one open to all MSDA members) hosted this year. Since this is a qualifying tournament, there will not be a novice category. Depending upon numbers, it may be possible to send additional teams. If you would like to do so please indicate this on the form and we will let you know on March 6th if space is available. Schools must bring one judge per two-person team. High school students may not be judges. If this causes great problems for you, please let me know and it might be possible to make other arrangements.

Please register by using the form on this link later than Wednesday, March 4h. Please email manitobadebate@gmail.com if you have any questions or any problems with the form.
