Time: Monday December 3, 2012 Registration from 4:00-4:15 1st event starts at 4:30 pm

Location: St. Mary’s Academy, 550 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg

Format: This tournament will be a qualifier for the Junior National Public Speaking Competition to hopefully be held in Alberta in April

Cost: $4 per student or coach for pizza, salad and drinks at the dinner break

There will be three rounds and all competitors must take part in all three rounds to be considered for the National Championships. Competitors may enter just one event if they choose to but in that case they will not be eligible to qualify for the Junior Nationals.

Part 1: Prepared Persuasive—Students will prepare and present a persuasive speech of from 7 to 13 minutes. The speech should include both a problem and a solution. No props charts or visual effects are allowed, but notes (not the entire text) are permitted.

Part 2: Readings—Students will prepare a reading of from 5 to 11 minutes. The reading can be part of a book, a story, or a poem. It must have been published in a book or magazine, not just the student’s or a friend’s work. It should not be memorized.

Part 3: Impromptu- Students will be given a choice of 3 topics and 2 minutes to prepare. Speeches must be from 3 to 5 minutes in length. If there is enough interest, there will be a novice Impromptu category, the difference being that in novice, students will have 6 minutes to prepare. Students who are trying to qualify for the Jr Nationals in Calgary may not be in the Novice Category.

Registration will be somewhat earlier than usual from 4:00- 4:15 pm with the Prepared Persuasive round beginning at 4:30. Round 1 will take place from 4:30-5:30 pm. Round 2 (Readings) will begin at 5:40-6:20 pm. There will be a dinner break from 6:20-6:50 pm during which time calculations will take place to determine the top three finishers in both the Prepared Persuasive and the Readings categories. These results will be announced by the end of the dinner break. Round 3 (Impromptu) will take place from 7:00- 7:45 pm. Following the third round students and coaches will be invited to the Cafeteria for a “Speak Off” between the top three from rounds one and two only. Special recognition will be made to the winners of these two events during the awards presentations following the Speak Off. We would anticipate that the awards would be made at approximately 9:00 pm

PLEASE NOTE: It would be appreciated if schools could submit one payment for students and coaches- cheques made out to St. Mary’s Academy please. Food will be provided free of charge to judges. We will try to accommodate vegetarians and gluten free dietary needs but need to be informed ahead of time. If students prefer they may bring their own food for dinner but please let us know if this is their intention so that our numbers are accurate. Schools are expected to provide one judge for every 2 competitors and these judges can be senior high students provided they are experienced.

Because of anticipated numbers, we must limit each school to 6 competitors per school. The Deadline for entries is Wednesday Nov. 28. More spots may be available but confirmation cannot be made before Thursday Nov. 29. Once remaining spots have been allocated no late registrations will be accepted.
