Junior Douglas Campbell (Grades 6 - 9)

St. Mary’s Academy

PLEASE NOTE DATE AND FORMAT!

Time: Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014. Registration from 4:00-4:15 1st event starts at 4:30 pm

Location: St. Mary’s Academy, 550 Wellington Crescent, Winnipeg

Format: This tournament will be a qualifier for the Junior National Public Speaking Competition in 2015.

STUDENTS/JUDGES MUST BRING THEIR OWN BAGGED SUPPER. SNACKS WILL BE PROVIDED.

There will be three rounds and all competitors must take part in all three rounds to be considered for the National Championships. Competitors may enter just one event if they choose to but in that case they will not be eligible to qualify for the Junior Nationals.

Part 1: Prepared Persuasive Speaking—Students will prepare and present a persuasive speech of from 5 to 10 minutes. The speech should include both a problem and a solution. The speech must be on a serious problem that actually exists. No props charts or visual effects are allowed, but notes (not the entire text) are permitted.

Part 2: Interpretive Readings—Students will prepare a reading of from 5 to 8 minutes. The reading can be part of a book, a story, or a poem. It must have been published in a book or magazine, not just the student’s or a friend’s work. It should not be memorized. Published speeches, e.g. Churchill’s speeches, may not be used unless they are part of a work of fiction.

Part 3: Impromptu Speaking-Students will be given a choice of 3 topics and 4 minutes to prepare. Speeches must be from 3 to 5 minutes in length. They must choose one of them and then prepare within four minutes. They may write notes but may not bring them up when they speak. Speakers may speak in favour of, against, in favour of and against, or about the topic. It should be the sort of speech that would be delivered if the speaker were asked to speak on short notice to a general audience on the topic given. They may interpret it within reason, including treating it as a metaphor but must speak about the topic that they have been given.

Registration will be somewhat earlier than usual from 4:00- 4:15 pm with the Prepared Persuasive round beginning at 4:30. Round 1 ( Prepared Persuasive Speaking) will take place from 4:30-5:30 pm. Round 2 (Readings) will begin at 5:40-6:20 pm. There will be a dinner break from 6:20-6:50 pm during which time calculations will take place to determine the top three finishers in both the Prepared Persuasive and the Readings categories. These results will be announced by the end of the dinner break. Round 3 (Impromptu) will take place from 7:00- 7:45 pm. Following the third round, students and coaches will be invited to the Cafeteria for a “Speak Off” between the top three from rounds one and two only. Special recognition will be made to the winners of these two events during the awards presentations following the Speak Off. We would anticipate that the awards would be made at approximately 9:00 pm

PLEASE NOTE: Schools are expected to provide one judge for every 2 competitors and these judges can be senior high students provided they are experienced..

Because of anticipated numbers, we must limit each school to 6 competitors per school. The Deadline for entries is Thursday, Nov. 27. More spots may be available but confirmation cannot be made before Friday, Nov. 28. Once remaining spots have been allocated no late registrations will be accepted.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS NOVEMBER 27, 2014
