Why does the track need resurfacing?

Post Date: May 18, 2021

The Doornbos track at Bartlesville High School was originally installed in 1988. Sixteen years later, in 2004, it had a major renovation which cost over a quarter-million dollars. That stripped the track down its base for reworking.

Thirteen years later, the 2004 surface had a thin overlay applied in 2017 as a less costly option than a deep renewal given the district's available financing via the 2016 bond issue. But that overlay would have an inherently shorter lifespan, much like adding tar over a roof to extend its life for awhile.

The track has now developed some obvious low spots and large cracks, so we need to invest in another complete renewal like the one performed 17 years ago. That would strip the track back down to its base to address low spots and install a completely new track surface. That more thorough renovation will be far longer-lived than the 2017 overlay.
