BHS Construction Update, 11/2014; Central Planning Underway

Post date: Nov 22, 2014 2:07:51 AM

Construction on the campus of Bartlesville High School is progressing as crews are in the midst of work on a roughly 100,000

square foot expansion project.

At this time, a majority of the steel is up on the large project at the south end, and that addition is within a couple of months of being dried-in,” meaning the shell of the structure will be sufficiently completed so that the bulk of the work can shift to the interior of the building. The work at BHS is scheduled to be completed in August 2015 and ready for use on the first day of the 2015-16 school year.

Upon completion of construction, BHS will become a 9-12 high school. In order to provide ample space for the addition of two grades, an addition to the science wing is being constructed on the north side of the building, adding four science labs for sophomores. Classrooms for sophomores will also be added to the southeastern portion of BHS, just south of the Custer Stadium grandstand. A large cafeteria and commons area is being built as well.

Ninth graders will be predominately housed in a freshman center. The freshman center is being constructed on the southeast corner of the existing BHS structure and will not be a standalone structure. The freshman center will allow students to slowly acclimate to the high school setting while being housed in a specific portion of the building for the majority of the day.

In addition to work at the high school, planning is ongoing for the renovation of Central Middle School, which will commence following the completion of the 2014-15 school year. All four floors at Central will be renovated and a new gymnasium will be constructed. The work will take place through the 2015-16 school year, and is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2016-17 school year.

During the 2015-16 Central students and staff will move to what is currently Madison Middle School. Madison Middle School will be relocated to the current BMHS facility as BMHS students and

staff will move to the expanded BHS. Beginning next year, the current BMHS facility will be known as Madison Middle School.

Regarding Bartlesville Mid-High School, a new secured entrance was recently completed. The secured entrance forces visitors to use the LobbyGuard visitor management system and enter the building through the main office. The entrance is located just east of the main entrance at BMHS. Additional projects will be completed during the summer of 2015 at BMHS in preparation for facility to become the new home of Madison Middle School beginning in 2015-16.

“It is an exciting time for our district,” said BPSD Superintendent Dr. Gary W. Quinn. “Upgrading our facilities is extremely important and I look forward to getting the work completed in a few short years. I know the end result is certainly something of which our community will be extremely proud.”
