BHS Construction Update, 1/2015

Here are some photos of the construction at BHS.

If you have driven by the BHS campus lately, you will notice the additions are truly beginning to take shape, particularly the freshman center which is being constructed on the southeast corner of the existing BHS structure. At this point, a majority of the addition on the southeast portion of the building is dried-in, and that process is expected to be completed in its entirety within the next few weeks. While the larger south addition needed some clean-up when, over Winter Break, a sprinkler head connected to the water supply burst in the cold, that addition is much further along than the north end. In addition to exterior work, installation of electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems is well underway.

The addition of science classrooms on the north side of BHS is taking shape as steel is finally being erected. The north science wing had several setbacks of late, with the basement level concrete wall being poured slightly too high and consequently having to be cut back and partially repoured. Steel erection was further delayed by an off-axis wall that had to be removed and repoured. These problems with a sub-contractor did not affect the cost of the project to the district, but caused unwanted delays in a project that has an ambitious timetable. Finally, the crane to complete the steel erection on the north end was literally stuck in the mud in Arkansas for awhile, but arrived on site in mid-January and steel erection on the north end began in earnest. The construction manager has a plan to expedite work on the north end to make up for lost time.

Over the next several months, work will continue at BHS. The project is slated to be ready for the start of the 2015-16 school year which begins on Wednesday, August 12, with the first part of August spent moving in.

Upon completion of construction, BHS will become a 9-12 high school. In order to provide ample space for the addition of two grades, a science wing is being constructed on the north side of the building adding four classrooms for sophomores. Classrooms for sophomores will also be added to the southeastern portion of BHS, just south of the Custer Stadium grandstand. A large cafeteria and commons area is being built as well.

Ninth graders will be predominately housed in a freshman center. The freshman center is being constructed on the southeast corner of the existing BHS structure and will not be a standalone structure. The freshman center will allow students to slowly acclimate to the high school setting while being housed in a specific portion of the building for the majority of the day.

In addition to work at BHS, planning is ongoing for the renovation of Central Middle School, which will begin at the completion of the current school year in May. As part of the project, all four floors of the building will be renovated, a new gymnasium will be constructed and parking will be added. The first phase of bids for the Central project is expected to go out in early spring.
