"Double Tenth Day! Happy National day!" Just after the Double Tenth Day holiday, the hall of Yongning Elementary School in Wuqi District, Taichung City, echoed with the cheerful voices of children. Here, they held a unique "Flag Challenge" English Day event, where foreign teachers and students from Yung-Ning Elementary School introduced the flags and national holiday stories of their respective countries. The entire school community followed the national flags and embarked on a journey around the world.
The event began with fifth-grade students, Wang Jueyu and Yang Yixin, who introduced the origin of Taiwan's Double Tenth National Day and the significance represented by the Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth flag, all in English. Teacher LuLu from South Africa explained the composition and meaning of the South African flag, highlighting its six colors, which represent a diverse and wildlife-rich country. She even sang the South African national anthem in five of the country's official languages.
International volunteer Ines from France introduced the meaning behind the blue, white, and red tricolor flag of France. She mentioned the grand Bastille Day parade on July 14th in Paris, as well as the spectacular fireworks display in the evening.Yung-Ning also has Teacher Zelda from Vietnam, and the students learned about the significance of the "Golden Star" flag, representing intellectuals, farmers, workers, businessmen, and the military.
The highlight of the event was when the students, guided by the foreign teachers, used English cue cards with the names of different countries to identify the corresponding flags. Correct answers were rewarded with exquisite little gifts. Throughout the event, children confidently spoke in English, celebrating the birthday of the Republic of China while engaging in exciting international cultural exchange.
International education has become a crucial element in nurturing future leaders. Principal Peng Wenzhen pointed out that Yung-Ning Elementary School, through the establishment of an immersive international education learning environment, encourages children to develop confidence and a fearless attitude toward speaking English through fun and practical themes and international exchange activities. Director of Academic Affairs Wang Shiyin expressed the hope that through National Day English Day activities, students will become accustomed to using English as a tool and, from an understanding of their own culture, ascend to the international stage. Yung-Ning Elementary School aims to "bring the world to the children's eyes and lead every child into the world!"
